One anachronism

they were very accurate with clothing, hairstyles, lack of makeup, the rickety carts, drinking milk from bottles - but one massive error is that no-one is smoking! No pipes, no snuff, no cigarettes, which simply isn't realistic for the 1930s. Does Ken Loach have a personal distaste for tobacco?

I just looked this up., this is a British film, not US, so I really didn't hear much and saw that Ken Loach was the director. Your presumption's most correct, that it was a religious. moral thing.
