The love story

Let me start off by saying I liked the movie, it wasn't great, but I liked it.

I'm also now going to do something Adam hates, compare the movie to the Hammer.

To me, one of the best parts of the Hammer was the love story. It felt like they had chemistry and Adam was a really good guy.

Road Hard, they really missed it, I really think it was because of bad writing too. This is why I'm comparing it to the Hammer, they got it right in the Hammer, so there is no reason they can't get it right in another movie.

First thing, I didn't feel a connection between them. Their first meeting, they just meet and it doesn't feel like there is a spark between them. The drunk girl wants to have a drink with Adam's character, but she doesn't seem interested at all. It's like, well maybe the next time they meet there will be a spark.

The next time they meet is at the company roast they set up. Basically she's rude to him. He asks her for information to help with the roast and she kind of screws him over. Her explanation, you made more money tonight for this than these people make in a couple of weeks, and you don't even do a little research. I don't see why he would fall for her there either.

That night, Adam's character seemed more interested in getting laid than actually being with her. It felt like he was just interested in a one night stand, not how you would treat someone you are truly interested in. Meanwhile she decides she's not going to drive back to the hotel and pick him up because she doesn't want to sleep with him. Once again, no sparks, why meet a 3rd time?

So once again, where is the chemistry between these two people why do you want to meet a 3rd time? It hasn't gone well at all the first two meeting you guys had.

I agree; developing the love interest was lacking. She threw him under the bus at the corporate gig; why would he fall head over heels for her? Think they needed to show more of how/why Bruce fell so hard for her for the audience to get emotionally vested.

I still enjoyed it and had several laugh out loud moments, but I don't think Adam and Kevin did their best with the script.

reply

Here's what I think they should of done, it would of been cute and funny.

In the movie when they first meet, Sarah's friend is a drunk fan, the fan wants to have a drink with Bruce, but Sarah says no, looks at her drunk friend and says we got to get home.

Sarah should of looked at Bruce, kind of smiles and says, yea let's all have a drink. They go for that drink, the drunk fan won't shut up about how much she loves Bruce, the bro show, celebrity barn raising, etc. etc. Bruce and Sarah could care less what her drunk friend is saying, they are just talking to each other and totally blocking out annoying drunk fan. Drunk friend is too drunk to realize she's being ignored.

At the end of drinks, Bruce asks Sarah for her number, and she writes it on his hand with lip stick or something. No need for the second meeting when she throws him under the bus. They could just move on to the 2nd meeting it could be in New Hampshire when he finds out her husband who passed away was a wood worker and they have a shop, we find out that they have a lot in common, and he totally falls for her.

reply

@alblmfld-1 Yeah, that would've worked, at least Sarah would know what the fuss was about, with her friend raving about Bruce the whole time.

reply

Ugh, I totally agree. You don't have to compare this to The Hammer to see how superficial the love story was. I just never bought it, and then to have him just move to New Hampshire is pretty far fetched. Also, there are a couple lines towards the end of the movie that gave me the most incredible douche chills. One is his daughter saying to the girlfriend "take care of him, nobody else has" and the other is Adam saying something equally cringe inducing that sounded like it came from his therapist.

The fact that the rest of the movie are bits literally taken straight from his radio and podcast shows didn't help. They actually have FLASHBACKS to David Alan Grier doing standup of routines he developed on the podcast (and Adam forces him to do every time he goes on). *beep* the "black kids names sound like prescriptions" thing came from Loveline/Dr.Drew! Maybe they could have thrown in Germany or Florida to round things off. It's just lazy writing.

All in all it was a complete disappointment. The Hammer was so much better and had real heart. I was honestly surprised at how bad this was, maybe crowdfunding movies isn't the way to go. Sorry Adam, I was rooting for you.

PS. You were a total dick to Alison. The way you treated her makes it pretty clear you are deeply insecure about getting total validation from everyone around you, no matter how many times you ask Brian (ON THE AIR!) if you're 'that kind of guy'. What do you think someone says when their boss puts them on the spot? I really hope you read this, I don't think you get any honest feedback in the 'baby doll' world. Can't wait to hear Brian talk about what a great movie this was. It could get very strange when they have the Rotten Tomatoes guy on, because I have a feeling this is going to be VERY low.

reply

Brian already reviewed it. I think he gave it a B and said he liked it.

reply

Un-freaking believable. Bryan is really a "Yes man" now!

You're probably referring to the last line Bruce says about how he won't miss stand-up: "I like the stretch of road I'm on right now." Yeesh.

I can't see how enjoyable this is for podcast listeners, which is kind of a slap in the face considering we help crowd fund it after being begged and begged, podcast after podcast, to pitch in. I can see why he wanted to utilize his funny bits that we've all heard before, to reach a bigger demo that don't/haven't listened to his podcast and maybe get more fans. This was pretty cliché and cheesy in terms of the daughter and love life. Especially the end. It seemed like he wanted to totally rid himself of The Man Show days by going sensitive. All in all, writing and acting could have been much better. Won't recommend.

reply

that was terrible. it almost was freaky the way she sleeps with him once and is already talking about future and moving in, that was crazy fast.
maybe it was due to time but that was pretty weird

You must not be very good in bed. I've had this happen several times and I am, at best, "mediocre" in the sack.

I haven't seen The Hammer (yet), but I really related to this movie since I am a comedian/filmmaker.

Her explanation, you made more money tonight for this than these people make in a couple of weeks, and you don't even do a little research. I don't see why he would fall for her there either.

She keeps him on his toes. His ex wife didn't do that. You can tell by the scene where he distracts her by saying "Did you do something different with your hair?"

Meanwhile she decides she's not going to drive back to the hotel and pick him up because she doesn't want to sleep with him.

I got the feeling that this was the first time she let her guard down since her husband died. Never lost anyone myself, but I feel like it would be hard to move on if I lost a wife while we were still relatively young (40s).

So once again, where is the chemistry between these two people why do you want to meet a 3rd time? It hasn't gone well at all the first two meeting you guys had.

I felt the chemistry. When she first appeared on screen I had a feeling she would come back at some point and she did.

I hope you are all right about The Hammer, b/c I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and if The Hammer is better then I cannot wait to watch it.

reply

I liked road hard, but the Hammer was a much better movie.

The Hammer is a really good movie, not just an Adam Carolla movie, it's great and well written. Sports Illustrated said it was the best Sports movie of the year, but it was really much more than a sports movie.

If you liked road hard, you'll love the Hammer. I really have no problem recommending the Hammer to anyone, I know Road Hard could be hit/miss with some people, so I kind of pick and choose who I recommend it too.
