Thoughts on the pilot episode

I thought the pilot episode was rather decent. Jennifer reminded me of the character from anger management with her anger issues,

I liked it. Pretty cool to see Jamie Pressley and Jessica Walter on the same tv show. JP was looking HOT in that waitress outfit..lol
I just wish I could watch this in HD.

It was barely decent.

Ethan Suplee being in it is going to keep me from watching though.

He ruined My Name Is Earl and I can see it here as well.

I like Jamie but I'll pass.

Haven't seen it. I was hoping there would be more reviews since Jessica Walter is usually comedy gold.

I thought it was cute. Just hope JP don't try too hard. Overall thought it was good in a "cute, ill give it a few more episodes"....

Blah, who am I kidding I'm a tv whore and will probably watch the series until its cancelled.

Bored of the mockumentary format. I was hoping the first time 'Jennifer' was talking to the camera she was taping herself or something. But than they had more of it later and it turned me off. Doesn't work with Jamie Pressly because she's too pretty to the point of distracting it's hard to take any character development seriously. Don't mistake that as 'pretty people can't be taken seriously'. I just mean it's harder to connect to her because right now she's being portrayed as NOT flawed because no one else is as driven as her and as self aware as she is. Jennifer has 'anger' issues, but she only blew up twice: the first scene in the office, and the piƱata at the party, both where she quickly calmed down. She had a chance to blow up at the sister in law but instead just accepts the situation. Her mother is the cliched oblivious to her what her daughter is saying, Jennifer just accepts it. She doesn't blow up in the employment agency office. This is not an individual with 'anger issues'. I've met people with anger issues, and they simmer for a while, rage for a good while and don't calm down for a good while longer.

So we have a beautiful, strong, for all intents and purpose, a calm self aware individual, considerate (considers her brother's feelings, cares about her daughter enough to want to take her shopping, cares about her best friend whom quickly forgives her), and also a smart individual. All we're given are shallow premises for character growth and right now it's not coming across as realistic.

Jessica Walter is awesome as always, but it does feel like we've seen a similar character in Arrested Development.

That is to say, the show isn't bad, the execution is decent but the main character is hard to root for, but it's all too familiar right now. The Michael J Fox had the mockumentary format, but it works (albeit the show is cancelled) because Michael J Fox is just easier to relate to, in part because they built his character around his real disease. That kind of struggle we can see and connect with on some level.

Does that make sense?

I thought the pilot was decent as well. It wasn't great, but it showed some potential. I'm interested in seeing what happens next.
