Thank you! I basically said the same thing in a post last week. I think the Gretchen character is annoying, and it's primarily because I think they cast the wrong actress in that role. I have no idea how old she really is, but I just don't think she fits in at all, and she's definitely not convincing as being Jaime Pressly's daughter.
Wasn't she supposed to have had her at like 17 or 18, that's why she looks so young. It's the same way with that sitcom Mom where they also look like sisters or friends, it's really believable because it does happen. Jennifer is likely only supposed to be in her mid 30s, so it's not that bad.

She really looks no older than any other actress who plays a teen on shows, seriously if you don't believe just flip over to ABC Family and watch Pretty Little Liars where the girls are all in their mid 20s playing teens. Heck the girl who plays Gretchen even has a recurring role on Chasing Life where she plays the best friend of one of the characters but I think her character is a lot better on that show.

I should clarify that my issue with this actress has nothing to do with her age. I don't think she looks all that old, I just think she's miscast in general for this particular role. Like I said, she simply doesn't seem to be a good fit. I'm not familiar with her and I've never seen her in anything else, but I think she's awful as Gretchen. Her whole demeanor just seems "off" to me. I actually think the Gretchen character adds very little to the show in the first place and doesn't even seem to be necessary, but that's a topic for another day.
Emily, I wasn't commenting on the Presley character not being old enough to have a 17yr old. It's the actress playing the role looks too old, in addition to that she is awful in the part.
I have seen "Mom" a few times and that is believable. I understand a 17yr old can have a baby and be the mother of a 17yr old at age 34. The issue is for me at least, the one playing Gretchen looks too old and is very wooden.
She also has no comic ability.
And yes compared to the girls on say "Modern Family" she does look too old, it's not uncommon for actors to be older than the parts they play, but this one could pass for 30 easily.
And the ones on Modern Family have some talent in regards to acting and being comical.
I wasn't talking about Modern Family where the girls look like they can pass for the ages they are playing but comparing it to Pretty Little Liars were all of the girls are really in their mid 20s and the girl who plays Spencer is almost 30, she doesn't look that bad.
Edit: She's not nearly as old as you think. She's just 21. According to this article I read on line she was 17 in 2011. It talks about when she was cast for something back then. Here's the link http://www.montgomerynews.com/articles/2011/10/04/entertainment/doc4e8 b7d9dabc3c066608940.txt

Yeah that's true. In a way I think that's kind of a good thing, since it means she won't be playing teen roles for long. Some actresses can't seem to get out of that.

I don't like her because she's such a CLICHE. Another boring snotty jerk lod/
Another long-suffering, more intelligent than mom, smart ass, know it all, disgruntled, grumpy, unpleasant "teenage" offspring.
We're already watching the "acting out". Boozing, sneaking boys into her room, next will be drugging or drunken driving in that ridiculous car her "dad" gave her. Oh, and teen pregnancy coming right up.
Just once, I would like to see a nice, pleasant, helpful, friendly young person on a show. One that I didn't loathe on sight.
Well most teens in real life aren't friendly helpful people....LOL.
This "actress" just isn't believable in the part and she isn't funny.
For example the actress who plays Haley on "Modern Family" is your typical "bitchy teen" but she has comic ability, she also shows that her character has empathy for others from time to time. Which makes her appear more realistic.
This one looks too old, doesn't look she could be Jaime Presley's daughter, and sounds like she is just reading from the script.
She's just not a very good actress. I saw her briefly in another show & she was plain horrible. She is very wooden & like the OP mentioned, doesn't have very good comedic timing. I actually don't mind how the character is written. Yeah, she's gotten in normal teenaged trouble, but she's a pretty good kid for the most part.

I totally agree. I think the role should have went to someone 12 or 13 yrs old and it would have worked better with a boy rather than a girl. If I were a original writer/creator, I would have had a younger jock son who Jennifer's brother would have stepped into as a father figure and been involved with his sports. Imagine Wayne getting into it with a ref at a football game or soccer match and getting ejected and Jennifer's son having to lecture Uncle Wayne afterwards about sportmans-like conduct during a game. Please hire me to write some episodes............ The daughter just is poorly cast and is an awkward fit in the show.
