They were soul mates...

I think the movie wanted to show how this girl didn't get along with her boyfriend on multiple occasions and also other people and how this boy was not interested in people around his age but they were perfect match for each other. They both understood each other like the way nobody else did in the movie and the whole 2 month they spent together, liking each other more and more was testament to this. Specially the last scene where she kissed the boy on the lip seemed to be direct hint at their "taboo" love.

But the movie also wanted to show that how unfortunate it was that this perfect match was never to be because of the age difference and class difference between them. This was subtly hinted at by the scene in which the boy explains about the painting to the girl suggesting how unfortunate it was that the artist of this supposedly appreciated piece of art and his lover met their sad ends without receiving appreciation for the excellent work.

Personally, I found the last scene very sad when they both were crying and hugging in the room. They both at that moment (after 2 months) knew that they were each other's soul mates. They even met through stroke of luck or chance i.e. process of girl getting the job, also they both had appreciation for music. Very few people are able to find soul mates, yet these 2 people did and yet they can't be together cause one is like 12 and the other is in 30's.

Good movie overall. I guess the director didn't want to take this "taboo" love too far, so it was subtly hinted throughout the movie with the direct implication only being that they were "just good friends".

Just an observation regarding your comments, I took her age to be 24, so they were 12 and 24, still a large gap at those ages. Wouldn't be an issue if he were 50 and she were 62.

But the final scene which showed them both playing the same musical piece, he and she in two different locations, to me hints that maybe they stayed in contact and maybe at some time later they reunited, even if only as close friends. It is fiction, it leaves any interpretation open for consideration.

Overall a very nice movie. I enjoyed it a lot.

yeah i don't remember what age they suggested for the girl in the movie, so I was going with around Leighton meester's actual age. I agree that 10-12 years is not a big difference for the people to be together, in current times a lot of couples have such age difference. I think the problem was the boy was 12 (physically not mentally) not of legal age to give consent, so "being in love" with a 12 year boy becomes unacceptable in society. I mean if it was a regular 12 year old boy then it wouldn't really be love, but they were mentally on the same level and hence could love.

And, if i am correct didn't she say towards the end of the movie that this was last time she will be able to meet him, or was it the boy that said will he be able to see her again, to which she replied no. I am not sure about this but I think they sort of made it clear that it was the end between them. I also feel like that she sort of knew that this was not going to work, so she wanted to go away from him, her reason to leave wasn't really compelling.

It had been two weeks so I re-watched it again today. When they were on the grass near the end, talking, he asked if she would ever see her old boyfriend again and she said "no". But when he asked if he and she would stay in touch she indicated that she was willing. Then of course she got the gift from him, the Cornet.

What happens in real life? Different things but I suspect most often the distance and time apart cause them to lose contact, especially when there is a 12 to 15 year age gap.

I think they both felt something that wasnt going to go away with time. Soulmates yes. I also think she sensed that she needed to leave before they got too close or someone else figured out. The author, Frank Whaley was very careful to keep this love pure with only that light kiss on the lips when she left. I wish he would have had the female character mention her musical life earlier in the movie as this could have further developed the story. I also think that any of us know that when you are gifted this sort of relationship it doesnt fade with time. You see that person ten years later and connect as before. Great to see something that was atypical hollywood. Wonderful acting.

"... with only that light kiss on the lips when she left. "

Not that it matters much but to me it seemed she kissed him on the cheek right next to his lips, much as an older sister might kiss her younger brother. The scene was strongly backlit by the bright window so it is hard to see exactly.

"I wish he would have had the female character mention her musical life earlier in the movie as this could have further developed the story."

Recall at about 28 minutes into the movie she is listening to him play as part of the musical group and as they are walking home through the park she comments she was moved by "the way the violins and the viola interact it's so sad and beautiful." So in a sense her character did reveal with that observation that she must have had musical training but the script did not have the boy pick up on that. I see it more as an advance notice to the viewer that she has musical training.

yeah, I pretty sure the core reason behind the movie was the love between these 2 people. However, the director seemed to keep this pretty ambiguous throughout the movie. I think that kiss, which I am pretty sure was a lip kiss, was to give closing that these 2 people were in love. Otherwise, that kiss was out place and "just friends" scenario could have been played out differently. I wish their love was made more clear while keeping it just as pure love, could have helped the movie to stand out more.

I don't think that was "the reason", I have made another thread about "collision of lifelines" to explain my take on this story. The affection they developed for each other was just a byproduct and the story is left open-ended because any of a number of things could happen in the years to come. But it isn't important to the movie because the collision of their lifelines changed both of their trajectories forever. They can't go back to the point before they met.
