Eleanor and Reggie, the collision of lifelines.

To me this movie is about the randomness of life, how single unpredictable incidents can throw our "lifeline" onto a completely different trajectory, leading to completely novel experiences.

My own definition of a "lifeline" is a 4-dimensional imaginary line for each of us, it represents exactly where we are in space and in time. This story deals with Eleanor's and Reggie's lifelines. They each are on trajectories that likely would never meet, then something happens to Eleanor, her boyfriend fails to come home one night, the next day he starts an argument where she works, she gets fired. It had to happen that day.

At the same time something happens to Reggie, his nanny abruptly quits right before mom is to take a trip to China, she is desperate, she hires Eleanor on the spot. It also had to happen that day.

So each of their lifelines gets changed to set up the collision of the two.

The third part of this random meeting of course is the compatibility of spirits, Reggie and Eleanor. They find something in each other that they found in no other. So while it is a growing experience for each, and a springboard to different, hopefully a better lives, none of it would have happened if it had not been for the random events which led to the collision of their lifelines.

Every movie could be classified that way really, all actions no matter how minor can have a profound impact on others.

I love this movie but you should check out Copenhagen (2014), a very similar film that actually manages to edge this out a bit.

Not only every movie, but the lives that each of us lead. I often choose to look at the story in movies this way, to understand the random elements that led to the outcome.

In my own life I can think of a number of "random" things that came up at a particular time that sent my own life onto a different trajectory. And I met people or encountered situations that would have been absent had the random event not occurred. You can likely think of a number of them in your own life.

To me it is just an illustration of the concept "Life is less about getting what you want and more about doing the best you can with what you end up getting."

Also, I saw Copenhagen, it is of course a quite different movie and I enjoyed it. Some of the same concepts can be found in "Beautiful Girls" where Marty helps Willie figure out where his trajectory is headed.
