What happened? (SPOILERS)

I am not sure what happened with Barbara.

- Did he kill her and didn't remember it? He says a few times that he is a sleepwalker.
- Did she die of natural causes in his bed? That's unlikely, what could it have been?
- Did his sister kill her out of jealousy?

Also, that scene with the motorcycle cop was very bizarre. Did that really happen? How could he have killed a cop and put his body in the back seat in broad daylight in the middle of the city without anyone noticing?

Much easier to write a script if it doesn't have to make sense

It is no so clear, but is not important.
She was dead and he continue his life normaly (?!?!?)

At the end it is not a detective movie, is a love movie.

I didn't like the ambiguity here despite being a fan of it in general. I agree with the poster below that it felt more like bad writing than it being open ended. Maybe someone who read the book can tell us more?

Most likely he killed her during some point in the night. By the way he casually disposed of her body it's apparent he's a psychopath. He goes to work the next day and seems to have no remorse. He carries on an affair with the dead girl's 'stepmother' also with seemingly no guilt. And he murders a cop.

This was a very bizarre film that presents us with a twisted and damaged main character. If there had been more backstory about he and his sister and how they survived after their parents' deaths perhaps it would have been more interesting. It seemed to be more preoccupied with his conquests of women though--his young students, as well as Barbara's stepmother--and then casually throws in the unhealthily close relationship with his sister.

As a result, the film felt fragmentary. The cinematography was great though.
