What did I miss?

And now tangent:
Why is that no matter the disaster or danger one is frantically dodging, it doesn't occur to anyone that perhaps they should put on a seatbelt?

While I'm on the subject, they came away from that tsunami crash completely unscathed. The prophets must REALLY like these folks.

Hmmm... seems they left out earthquake.

And yeah, in one scene their car is seen doing a takeoff (tsunami scene) and in the next scene they are peacefully discussing events in some office (or lab). Were they teleported? Did they fly into a wormhole whose other end came out at he lab?

Were they still in Peru? Where did those 6 ti 8 hours travel time from Peru go? Were airplanes still flying around with some many end of the world events happening everywhere?

Then so funny, back at their lab when they escape Neil mentions that they have to go back to Peru and some one says "we can't drive there". Well, actually, you can drive from Davenport to Peru, it will just take you a bit longer. Then later they lose their car and I am thinking 'Great, now they are walking t Peru'.

Then there is that air of danger as two people wearing protective suits very carefully place the contain on that column and then open it to leave the rock there then step about 40 feet away and start taking notes. I am over there thinking 'Shouldn't they be a bit farther away than that?'

And my favorite part when the nasty g-men take the lead cylinder and helicopter guy says something like 'Please tell me you looked inside [the cylinder to verify that the smart Prof did not give them an empty cylinder]'. Then we see g-guy open the cylinder, then flash and zap. I am here thinking 'Ok, at least the guy proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has the rock (or had)'.

The fellow who wrote the first review said that this was a generic disaster film, very similar to so many others. lorrainearmstrongfl wrote a checklist of sci.fi. tropes that more or less need to be touched upon in a disaster film.

I agree with both of them... with this one personal observation... I'm writing this on the 2014 Labor Day weekend. Here in the USA it marks the official end of Summer. No lifeguards on beaches, kids back in school, tax free shopping days for kids clothing and back to school stuff. A lot of picnics and cook-outs, filled with the same people they are always filled with: friends from the past that you no longer have any interest in, ex-spouses, relatives who went their own way years ago and now get together once or twice a year to compare notes, and so on.

It's the same old *beep* endlessly repeated, with a few different faces now and then. Very strange then, that so many of us find it so hard to abandon the ritual.

That is what disaster films are to me, a mix of the same cast members, a few new faces, old tired plot lines, and cheap hamburger meat and "god knows what" hot dogs.

No matter that it seems that I have seen them all.... sometimes, like a guilty pleasure, I'll sneak one more in!

OMG they missed a big one. No Pandemic! I didn't see any Pan Flute groups? So where are the Giant Guinea Pigs!

You forgot that every disaster has to happen exactly where the heroes are.

how about poor editing? in that last chase scene, their truck transforms from a Ford Flex into a Chevy Tahoe and back again?

I was wondering why the helicopter the DOD guy was flying around Iowa in had a Canadian call sign.
