Hard to say if its a masterpiece or a can of garbage

cant really make my mind up whether this movie was good or bad.. its driving me nuts haha! anyone else felt the same way?

Among my top rated movies. I think it's brilliant.
First time I saw it, I had my doubts, but I've rewatched it 5 times now, and it's just great.

You can even call it a B-movie if you like, but it's a masterful one.

For one, Tusk doesn't attempt to be something it isn't. It's a comical horror flick, and doesn't want to be taken seriously. Unlike so many movies today that try to bring fake drama and gravity to the proceedings, this film is being played straight.

It's got good pacing and atmosphere, it's got Parks' excellent portrayal of Howard Howe, and what's best about it: you can tell that everyone involved in it is having FUN!

Yes, this film is just a barrel of fun.

That sums it up pretty well. I watched it and was confused. Wtf? So I watched it with my teenaged daughter and after I saw her (same) reaction, only then I found it funny. Very strange. And she said the same thing and watched it with a friend of hers.

reply

Wow, shut up. This was the worst film I've seen in years. Utter garbage. For anybody to call this a "masterpiece" they'd have to be severely brain damaged. Should be wiped from the world like the stain it is. Ashamed to have watched it in its entirety.

It's a masterpiece. It blends humour, ridiculousness and horror perfectly. And it's original.

It'll be a cult classic in a few years time.

I think Smith just wanted to get an Oscar-worthy performance out of Michael Parks in the dumbest possible film ever.

reply

That's probably the best summary of the film.

"Ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?"

reply

This. I would say that this movie was way too well made for what it was about but that's what makes it so great.

Then there's Yoga Hosers. Not much to like there. Kevin Smith is just a random thought generator now.

reply

If u listen to Kevin's podcasts.... what you wrote is almost ver-batim the reaction he was hoping for in the audience. .. .. because it indicated he had made something ... his own, that connected with people.

reply

It was *beep* awesome/hilarious without a doubt. To say it was terrible is just silly. There are actual TERRIBLE movies out there.

reply

Cool.

It's pure garbage

reply

I'd say closer to the garbage can than masterpiece.
Seems to have been influenced by Tarantino's Grindhouse stuff.
May have worked better as a short, or part of a horror anthology.

I wouldn't call it neither garbage nor a masterpiece, but I would say that if you loved Roger Corman B-movie schlock of the 70s and early 80s, then this is right up your alley. I found it a loving tribute to the weirdo horror concepts of that era, which were high on off-the-beaten-path ideas and ambition, but low on budget, and a mixed bag in talent.

These kind of movies were made with shock and humor in mind, and I think Kevin Smith confidently had his fingers on the pulse of this kind of filmmaking with Tusk.
