Thoughts On The Film.

Aside from Interstellar, this is probably the movie I'm most looking forward to seeing this year. However, I'm from the UK and therefore, have no choice but to resort to being patient and watching it on the internet.

So while I'm patiently waiting to watch it, I thought I'd ask those of you who have seen it, what you made of it? I know not many of you will have seen it because it only came out on limited release yesterday and it would probably be better to wait until Tuesday (When the movie is released on US Itunes) to post this. However, I thought I'd ask now as the anticipation is killing me and I'm anxious to get a read on whether the movie will be able to match my high expectations or not.

So for those of you who have seen it, please give your rating out of 10 and share what you liked and disliked about the movie.

Also, if you have managed to see it for free on the internet, a link to where I can watch it would be much appreciated (No spammers please).

Saw it this morning, I'd give it 8.5/10. Very smart and funny, the audience reaction was completely divided in half, the guest speaker hated it, I personally loved it though. Probably my 3rd favorite movie of the year next to Boyhood and Only Lovers Left Alive. It reminded me of a mix of Wes Anderson,Woody Allen, and Charlie Kauffman with an excellent jazz score. The characters are all miserable, which was a big turn-off for a lot of the crowd, but I think they missed the point. If your an artist or writer, you'll certainly be attracted to the themes of the movie.

just finished it on iTunes and give it a solid 7. Schwartzman does an excellent job portraying a self-absorbed relentless a-hole in this. I could do without the nauseating shaky cam sequences and some scenes had poor sound quality but overall it is a good film.

What did you find poor about the sound quality?

reply

I watched it on itunes using Beats headphones (to be honest) but some of the scenes I noticed distracting background noises and just poor sound quality. It wasn't throughout the entire movie but it was noticeable enough for me to pick up on it in certain scenes.

I found the sound quality to be noticeably poor also. I've yet to watch past the scene in the diner with Philip's ex because at these two points I noticed that the background noise of the diner drowned out the dialogue:

1. When Philip is complaining about his ex being late I couldn't hear her response. To be fair, I don't think it was that important and it was probably something along the lines of calm down I'm her now can we drop it?

2. Not watching past this scene because I couldn't hear this line may seem petty but I feel that by missing the line I'm missing out on a key indicator of the extent of Philip's misanthropy and his overall character. When his ex says she's found a new flat mate, Philip says something and then his ex says she's been married for 2 years. What does Philip say?

Moss and Pryce shine in this otherwise uninteresting tale. While I love Indies, this one just felt like being stuck in bad company for a couple of hours. These characters aren't people you'd want to know or spend time with. Even villains have interesting stories or quirks - we all have something. So, these characters ring untrue. That, sums up this film for me.

The EYES see only what the HEART can comprehend. 

I just watched it tonight and it was brilliant. A darkly hilarious character study that benefits from a traditional yet unique-to-the-form structure that simulates the form of a novel by John Updike or Philip Roth (I'm guessing the main character's name was a nod to another cantankerous, Jewish-American novelist). If you're a fan of Alex Ross Perry (as you should be), or simply love personal, character-driven films and contemporary lit (lots of great references, including a nod to Martin Amis' brilliant and underrated Money), you will find something to enjoy in Listen Up Philip, despite its frequently detestable protagonist. I rushed right to IMDB to give it a 10 out of 10.

depicts unlikable characters in an attempt to be arty, as if it's somehow quirky and clever. you watch some dudes be *beep* for 2 hours. you might like it if you enjoyed Inside Llewyn Davis, but the plot isn't even that good and overall uninteresting. 3/10

This was well made, but I found it to be intellectual psycho-babbling at it's worst. Philip and Ike were uninteresting *beep* If either of them had asked me for the time, I would have wanted to punch them in the face.

Even if I don't like a particular movie, I often understand some points mentioned by people who liked it, but here? Funny, in what universe? It was unbearable as much as its characters. I don't know how I managed to finish it.

Tedious, dull, hard to sit through. Its saving graces are two-fold in my opinion: it shines a light on the personality/character of deeply anti-social and self-destructive individuals; and, to a lesser degree, it sports occasional chuckle-worthy banter. The pseudo-intellectual voice-over arcs slowly from darkly humorous to tiresome as the film progresses. What kept me going was the seeming likelihood that someone would punch Philip in the face (or kick him squarely in the junk). But then that never happened. So. 5/10.

Jonathan Pryce is great. The film is nauseating and gives arthouse movies a bad name
