So disappointing

I'm always interested in a modern Shakespeare story, but everything about this film fell flat. Props to Delroy Lindo, he delivered his lines with (somewhat) of a degree of enthusiasm and passion. Ethan Hawke, my god he looked bored, along with the majority of the actors. Could have been a great re-telling of a classic. Everything from the set to the props felt rushed and therefore fake or unnecessary. Nothing about this movie was "cool", well directed, well acted, etc.

One, of many, things that bothered me was that the gang wore helmets. These guys are supposed to be ruthless outlaws.

The actors all came off looking like they were warming up for something else. If I fealt like digging, I'd go 50/50 the top-billed were.

Shame, what a waste. Should have shelved this for a very long time.

I wasn't disappointed at all, though I expected to be after reading the reviews on IMDb.

The screenplay contained a fraction of the lines in the play, so for me the movie was kind of like cliff notes.

Actors do not have a job...they have a blast!

I know what you mean with a lot of the actors feeling just catatonic. Sometimes they'd hit good stuff (I actually enjoyed a lot of Hawke's performance), but I got the feeling that the director just didn't get Shakespeare, didn't understand that it's not this somber, brooding thing, that it can be light and fun as well as shadowy and dark (usually within the same play!)

I blame the director; he didn't infuse everybody with the right spirit.

You touched on the costumes, too, though, and you're right to say that they were lousy. "Uh...get a bunch of '50s leather jackets that Brando might've worn? Sure, we're done here."
