A Strange Success Story

I think it is hard to for us hard-bitten capitalists to accept a portrait of a man who is not ambitious or bitter. Someone who never derailed and is content.

Without the woman who latched onto Burt, Burt's Bees would never have existed. Without Burt, Burt's Bees would not have had someone pure and unworldly at it's center.

Both sides provided something essential. That is what a partnership is all about.

I think there are many creative other-worldly types out there who could be taken in hand by a smart business person and be propelled into making something to better the world.

You don't want to feel cheated in the end of course and I hope that Burt was helped more than he was hurt.

Oh, I think there is some resentment there. Maybe not outright bitterness (he probably prevents himself from dwelling on it too much for it to ever get to that point) but some resentment and I daresay even anger. He's human after all. Notice when towards the end when asked whether he would like to see her again and talk to her, he responds quite shortly that he has nothing to say to her so why would he want to see her.

I admit that you are right about his feeling of resentment. I admit also that she took advantage of him. I just don't feel that in the end he was worse off.

reply

This is true. He certainly comes off as the better person. Good for him.
As for the woman that took complete advantage (and even has the gall to boast about it as some inspirational speaker) there's such a thing as karma.

I like the brand, and I wanted to like him, but about halfway in it become difficult for me to not dislike him at least somewhat.

The impression I got is that they screwed each other over (in his case, he literally screwed her over - he was surprised she'd get upset that he was sleeping with other women?!).

you summed it up exactly !!!!
