The rating jumped from 7.8 to 5.6 in one day

I have doubts if I should still watch this. Am I just going to waste my time on this or should I not trust the IMDB rating?

I worked on the film, so you may think this is biased, but it depends what you want out of sci-fi. It's a film using the sci-fi genre to comment on the way we live. It's about gender equality, aging and class struggle. It's not the flashy big-budget sci-fi films we see in theaters today. This was an indie film made on a very low-budget and I think it's incredibly impressive for what can be accomplished. It doesn't rely on conventional storytelling or tropes of the genre. That's why it's getting a lot of divisive reviews. Watch it and let me know what you think...

I will watch it, then. I am not looking for big Hollywood flicks. My tastes go beyond that. I am after original thought-provoking, quality films with good writing, and of course, good acting! I will give this movie a review after watching it. 😃

I loved how there were explosions, but they weren't really important to this movie. It was as if one of those flashy movies was going on across town, and that's what much of the sci-fi fans want to see, but this much smaller movie chose to focus on something much more subtle. The homeless girl sleeping in the bushes is the perfect analogy for what is going on here. Thanks so much for helping bring some much-needed perspective to the genre.

It doesn't get divisive reviews because it doesn't rely on tropes or conventional storytelling. It gets those because the premise is incredibly flawed. As a commentary, this film fails completely. Women become basically worthless with age could only be conceived if you bought into today's far left rhetoric. Beauty and fertility being the only worthwhile qualities about women is never gonna happen, ever. It's a delusional thought. The slight commentary on class struggle is decent, but not well fleshed out.

The quote about kindness towards the end could've only been written by someone with a truly cynical view of the world and a very dystopian view of the future.

To comment on other posts here: No, this film isn't for "women". It's well put together for what it is and puts up a few good points, but is too removed from reality to be considered commentary.

I thought the setting was more along the lines of an "impenetrable" job market and not her sex as the delimiting factor, but her age. As commentary this does work being that age discrimination is a very real thing right now in today's job market and with the rapid progression of technology and the increasing rate of population it doesn't take much of a leap to envision a similar setting in the near future.

reply

I explicitly said her sex AND age. Judging by the general tone of the film and the depressed women who are constantly crying in other apartments (they listen to them, remember?) I think this is very much about BOTH factors.

In any case. I don't know how it is in America's job market, but in Europe this is still far from the truth. While it is of course harder to get a job at an age of 50+, it is not to such an extent that one should worry about the future. It's simply about companies investing in you. When you're 50+ their investment is gonna go into retirement in the foreseeable future.

Again: I enjoyed the movie. I gave it a 7/10. I just didn't like the implications of the commentary.

Well you have to look at the rating and the rating breakdown. 70% of those who rated it were men and to be honest, I think the film resonates more with women. Not trying to make assumptions but I have a feeling some of the men who watch scifi are looking for something that has a very heavy futuristic atmosphere along with gadgets and such. I liked the film but it's slow paced and the last third of the film does slow down probably a bit too much, but the story itself is one to really make you think and there are some issues here while not tackled in an obvious way in the film, you feel their underlying presence. And I think the acting is very good.

Not sure your gender but either way I would be interested in your thoughts after you see it.

I love the sci-fi genre (I am female), and my boyfriend is not particularly fond of it, but he'd read about this movie and suggested we watch it. We watched it last night, and it was a slower paced film, and I really liked how it didn't slap you in the face with the futuristic sci-fi aspects that are typical of the genre. I really liked the relationship between Jules and Gwen, and found the complex nature of women navigating this future world both scary and intriguing. My boyfriend didn't really say anything last night about the movie, but this morning he started talking about it, and questions he had, and I gave him my interpretation of some of the scenes he was questioning. He said it must have been a good film, because he was still thinking about it the next day, and wanted to know more about this world. So, it definitely made an impression on him!

I went into it knowing it was a drama with a sci-fi setting, and I thought the pacing was perfect. I liked that even though the sci-fi aspect of it wasn't as "heavy" as it could have been, but it was important to the story. I also like that the actual time frame of the movie was pretty ambiguous. All the characters were really interesting to me, and I thought the acting was great as well. This actually resonated with me even though I'm a guy.

I think it's more of a woman's movie too but open-minded men would appreciate it as well. I cried a couple of times, the story and acting were beautifully done.

I think anyone with sensitivity to objectification and issues of superficial beauty can get something out of this. Of course, a lot of what the film was saying is obvious, but it's not far off from what could be a type of future we may be headed for. or maybe in a way, we're already there.

I'm a male and thought the movie was outstanding in all aspects except I would of preferred a more tragic ending. One where the rift between the mother and daughter widens. For a minute I thought they where going to go down that road. At least the finale wasn't cheesy. I do agree that most people, especially men, desire futuristic CGI action from sci-fi.

If you liked this movie, another movie that's somewhat similar in style as far slow pacing, strong female protagonist, and technically classified as sci-fi - even though sci-fi definitely takes a backseat - is "The Wall". It's actually one of my favorite films. Totally different themes but I do think there is one scene where she reflects on motherhood. It's also another one women claim to be able to relate to more than men.

I see you decided to watch it already, so I'm replying for anyone else who might happen to read the topic: DEFINITELY don't trust the IMDb rating. It's very surprising. 7.8 seems more like it. It won't be for everyone, but it's very good. I gave it a 9.

This film has about ten or more phony reviews by people who have only reviewed one film, so it probably has tons of phony ratings, also.
It was a mediocre film, which is probably why they got so many people to write phony reviews on the IMDB that gave it ten stars.
