This movie sucks ass and badly!!!

Just watched most of this crap but was smart enough to get up and leave the theater with about 45-50 minutes left in it. Simply boring and terrible non-sense.

Hearing quite the opposite from other people who have seen it, but I respect your opinion. Very much looking forward to it myself.

I have to tell you, while I don't think your harshly-worded response is entirely fair, the film did start to meander even more after the 1 hour mark. It's a disappointment since I'm such a fan of the electronic music scene and there were certain nostalgic elements I connected with here.

Unfortunately the plotline is hardly existent and the characters aren't interesting. To me it felt like a bunch of name dropping that was supposed to be a nod to people "in the know," while the significance of it all was pretty much nil.

I agree with you completely.

After 1 hour I thought "where is this all going?"

And the characters were, like you said, not interesting at all. It's like they were all bored with themselves and their lives, even when the DJs were successful.

The script was not that interesting either, except for maybe one or two phrases. Everything else... so boring and uninspired. Some people in a restaurant and their conversations would be "come on, eat some more" "oh you look great" "have one more beer" etc, there was never anything substantial. If that was the point - to show these people really led empty lives and avoided feelings - I kind of get it, but we didn't need 3 hours of a film to show that. Plus the seen-it-all-before "musician goes to drugs" plot.

How can anyone give a fair review of a film and not watch even half of the entire film? I saw it and I found it to be a very personal story of a character journey threw an important time of electronic music. A worth watch!

I agree with most people--to say it "meandered" in the second half is generous. Plotless? Pointless? Yes, and yes. I saw this at the Toronto Inter. Film Festival, so the director (and writer) was able to clarify some things. It's really the story of her brother (the co-writer), so although it's certainly not a documentary, to tell a true story is harder than fiction. Things don't come neatly together, etc. So I sympathize. On the other hand, for the viewer--esp. someone not familiar with all the people in that scene in the 1990s--it's tough to follow. On the other hand, if you're a fan of that era/music, this would be a good movie to see.

I have to agree with the OP, what a boring movie, nice move to leave the theater, that's what this film deserves.

Always happy to see posts from people who have walked out in films. The distributors got your money.

As someone who DID see all of it, I have to agree with the OP, and I'll even expound a little.

I've been tuned into the "French touch" movement for a long time now, so this is a topic I am interested in. I'm obsessive about Daft Punk. Going in I knew this movie wasn't about Daft Punk. I didn't need it to be about Daft Punk. But so in being a movie about the Parisian garage/house scene that ISN'T about Daft Punk, what IS the movie about? "Cheers, I guess" is one answer. "Nothing" is a better one.

I was surprised how far into the movie I got before giving up. Then additionally how long the movie kept going... and how much nothing continued to occur. This movie is not about anything at all. It's not about music (in a single scene two characters compare various kick drum samples for probably less than 30 seconds of this 2hr 11m film). It's not about DJing (the various DJs are all shown putting a record on numerous times and that is IT, beyond then dancing behind the decks). I guess it tried to be about characters? But even to say that is quite a stretch.

In at least one instance a shot of the main character reacting to another's dialogue was cut short in a way that left me thinking "hey, I was watching that", while the majority of the 2+ hour movie is filled out with making sure we witness the characters doing things like nothing, or maybe crossing a room. I just kept thinking of the line in the lyrics of Chilly Gonzales' I AM EUROPE: "I'm a movie with no plot, written in the backseat of a piss-powered taxi." A lot of riding around in taxis in this movie.

I can imagine someone arguing against everything I've just said by maybe using a term like "French cinema", but just no. Gaspar Noe, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Romain Gavras, Quinten Dupiex, Michel Gondry, even Mathieu Kassovitz or how about Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo themselves! These are "French cinema" contemporaries that lo and behold, don't make boring movies!
