This is the film version of Mo Hayder's novel 'The Treatment'. A book that is part is a series of novels set in England revolving around a detective called Jack Caffrey.
For some stupid reason, Hayder has allowed the film to be set in another country, when the Caffrey books are English through n through.
I was hoping the Caffrey books would be made into films or TV shows and given the respect these fantastic books deserve, but oh well.
Guess no English film maker had intrest. In my opinion, it is a good thing she allowed her book to be set in another country, as it now gets international attention.
My personal opinion about many british crime series and films, is that I am nog a huge fan of most of them. Not hard enough, too much talk talk and a huge 'nice well dressed detective vs sjovel villain' cliché. Best example is comparing Law & Order LA with Law & Order UK...
Well, having just watched it, it is exactly that - clichéd. I wasn't impressed with the story nor the disheveled, bug-eyed Dutch lead who practically runs amok throughout the entire film with his tantrums, disregarding protocol and perhaps some laws with his obsession.
If you've watched a number of recent European cop films, you'll find those stories and the characters somewhat similar to this. It's getting tiresome: if you've seen one, you've seen them all.
Well you have to like the 'bad cop, Hitlerlike villain' thing in the first place. It is indeed very popular among both American and European crime shows and movies. But then ofcourse, people pay to see that. It is like the slasher horrormovies we sam in the 90s and early 2000s: Yes we all knew what to expect, but we still watched it.
I like Mo Hayder her books by the way and she again portrayed the cop (in the book he is called Jack Caffery) as he is shown in the movie.
If that's true that the story is originally English, I agree.
Nevertheless the film was very well done and the Belgian element made the story much less boring than setting it in some bland English countryside or industrial town IMO.
Can't wait until this is released elsewhere. I love Mo Hayder and this book is one of my favorites.

I'm glad another country made this film. Hollywood would've hacked this up, as they wouldn't be able to touch what this director did here. Kudos to Hans Herbots for making a terrific film. I never read the book, hell, I didn't even know there was a book until now. But even if it doesn't have the exact same following as the book, Hollywood would have made it worse.

Belgium, France, Spain seem to be willing to go that but further with things like pedophilia and rape etc. I think the level of taboo in this story would mean UK and State's probably wouldn't want to make it
