About the scene in that cafe...(SPOILER)

Why did the old teacher shoot the blackmailer? At first he wanted the blackmailer to kill him instead. But then, when he said "I didn't rape this girl, I was just blackmailing her", he changed his mind and shot him! Your thoughts??

Just saw it. I think Damien tried (and maybe he did) to rape her when she was 12 and that´s the reason he was in jail. And then at the end of the movie when he found out that another older man achieved this even with her consent, he got mad and killed him.

He probably wanted to blackmail Barbara himself, obviously he loves her, so he needed to kill the other man. Then we see he doesn´t give the phone to Barbara, he just proves her that he has it.

Obviously he wanted to blackmail Bárbara and he needed the phone for that, so that's correct. But he didn't necessarily need to kill the man to get the phone (later, of course, he needed to kill the little girl in order to leave no evidence). It was something else which made him lose his mind and shoot him.

There's also one thing most people get wrong: Damián didn't rape or try to rape Bárbara in the past. The reason why he's in jail is because he hurt a man in order to protect her (the same thing he does with Luis). Actually, I think Damián idealizes Bárbara to an extent where although he desires a sexual contact with her he doesn't see himself worthy of it (after all she's a young woman married to someone much more successful and attractive than him).

So, when he finds out that Bárbara had voluntary sex with the man he has in front if him, whom he deems despicable and worthless (and of course, inferior to him), he doesn't understand why Bárbara has rejected him all these years. He bursts in anger and his first reaction is to kill Luis. The idealization he has for Bárbara disappears and now he uses the phone to blackmail her for sex.

How did you learn "he's in jail because he hurt a man in order to protect her"?

reply

He said that, if I remember correctly it was to Luis during their conversation.

I couldn't agree more, I've just seen the film and that is exactly what I thought. His reason for killing Luis is ANGER. He can't believe that Barbara consented to have sex with that man, which probably means that Barbara never consented to have sex with himself (at least not completely if you know what I mean). After that, everything goes out of control and he needs to go killing everybody to avoid prison, then he decides to blackmail Barbara. But the key is that, in my opinion, he thinks that while he is deciding what to do with the two guys at the bar. It is then, and not before, when he thinks he can take his revenge with Barbara. Not for having been in prison for her fault; not for her lying to him about the rape; but for her having sex with some old, unattractive man.

People saying it was for blackmail are just being stupid. The man was not coldly motivated - he was acting on passion. He couldn't believe that Barbara was jerking him around and shot out of hostility. He was both envious and refusing to accept that his darling was so manipulative.

He eventually comes to accept it though, and decides to live with the knowledge of Barbara as less-than-perfect.
