Rosemary's haircut

They changed so much of this movie from the original why did they bother to leave in the part about Rosemary getting her hair cut? In the book and the movie Rosemary talked about getting her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon. But Vidal has passed on so why do a hair cut scene in this movie? Just was odd to me.

I don't get why she gets her hair cut period, but hey that's just me.

I thought there was a reason for it and I could totally be mistaken and wrong but once Rosemary got pregnant she did not feel the same, did not feel good, felt sick & horrible & pained. I thought the haircut represented her changing her looks to maybe change how she felt. And since chopping your hair that short will sure give you a change, I don't think they ever addressed it so I guess she just wanted less hair?

And Guy thought it was beautiful this time. In the original he hated it. I guess they wanted to make their relationship look more loving this time?

Well he may love her hair in this one but he also cheats on her in this one so I doubt they were trying to make this relationship "more loving"

A woman getting short hair nowadays doesn't seem like much of a fashion statement compared to doing it in 1968. She should have had it shaved on one side; that would have been more trendy

reply

I agree! What was the whole point of getting her hair cut? Did they think she could fight evil better with short hair? It looked like a really cheesy wig too.

The movie followed the book VERY closely. So in the book Rosemary gets her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon and they put that in the movie. Vidal actually did cut Mia Farrow's hair in that pixie cut. But this movie was totally different from the book so why leave the haircut in? I agree- the wig was cheesy looking!

In the original the haircut was really shocking because it was so extreme; it was almost a crew cut. And her husband hated it; it made her look even more sickly and deranged. The way they dealt with the haircut in this version was ridiculous. It wasn't shocking, or even very different. and her friends and husband actually liked it. completely and utterly pointless scene in a totally pointless remake of a classic..

In the book and the movie Rosemary talked about getting her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon.

No, she had her hair cut AT Vidal Sassoon ("It's Vidal Sassoon."). Nothing was said about his actually cutting Rosemary's hair. A big deal was made of Sassoon's cutting Farrow's hair for the film but it was just PR because she'd hacked off her long hair with cuticle scissors while she was involved with Frank Sinatra. If you do a search for Sassoon's signature cuts, none of them look remotely like Farrow's semi-crew cut. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2269357/Vidal-Sassoon-I-d id-pixie-cut-says-Mia-Farrow-hairdressers-signature-style.html

Farrow's account is accurate because I remember when she cut her hair (I had a crush on her and was distressed because I loved long hair). She was on Peyton Place at the time and left shortly thereafter.

That's what I thought. I thought Mia Farrow cut her hair and they wrote it into the script. Her marriage to Sinatra was failing and he actually had her served divorce papers on the set of Rosemary's Baby. They talk about it on the DVD. It was definitely a weird thing to include in the remake.

Rosemary getting her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon (whether Vidal actually cut it or it was just at his salon) was in the book. It's why they included it in the movie. Mia Farrow wore a wig during the first part of the movie before her movie hair cut specifically so they could say she had her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon and show her real life pixie cut. It doesn't matter if her pixie cut wasn't Vidal's original style - he still cut it. In fact he had a cameo in the original movie - he didn't play himself - he just played a guest at Rosemary and Guy's party.

Mia Farrow cut her hair when she was on Petyon Place. I read she cut her hair because she was tired of everyone talking about it, not because her marriage was ending to Frank Sinatra.

Incidentally it was hardly a crew cut! It was a very short pixie cut. It wasn't a buzz cut.

So there was absolutely NO reason to include the hair cut in the remake since they changed everything else that was in the book.

I didn't know that about her hair, that's interesting. I always thought her hair looked a little weird at the beginning of the movie, it's interesting to find out it's a wig. I'll have to look closer the next time I watch.

I didn't mean to imply she cut her hair because her marriage was failing, I just thought she wanted a change and had it done during the film. I didn't think the pixie looked that bad either and always wondered why they said that in the movie, but I guess that was in the book. (Btw, that wasn't me who called it a buzz cut.)

I'll have to look for Vidal Sassoon at the party, too. Thanks for all the interesting info.

I think you're right, mighty_spoiler. Now that I know the haircut was in the book and not a Mia Farrow thing, it makes sense. They probably kept it in for all the reasons you stated.

reply

Sorry mymoviemind - I didn't mean to imply that you said it was a buzz cut. I should have been more clear.

Not a problem. Just saying. lol

Rosemary getting her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon (whether Vidal actually cut it or it was just at his salon) was in the book.

Having one's hair cut AT Vidal Sassoon was a very different thing than "by." For one thing, VS didn't necessarily spend time in any one salon (he was based in London) and when he did cut, his fee was in the thousands (bear in mind we're talking pre-Nixon dollars). There was nothing in the Woodhouse budget, no matter how much Guy was earning in commercial residuals, that would justify that sort of extravagance. And your chronology is correct. I have no doubt that there are wedding photos that show Farrow with her "cuticle cut."

reply

Yeah, they could have left the haircut out.

Back when the original came out, the Vidal Sassoon haircut was all the rage and so they used it. They really didn't need it now.

Also, Mia Farrow actually cut her very long locks for real. Zoe wore an ugly wig.

Her "haircut" was an ugly wig.
