It wasn't supposed to be a one-off drama. It was a pilot episode that has the potential to be commissioned in to a full series. I think that has confused some people that thought that they were either tuning in to a series or a one off drama that would tell the full story and tie everything off at the end.
They couldn't write a truly satisfying ending with a full explanation of everything and tie everything off because they would need that material to put in to a full series.
From what I have read, they will review reactions to the pilot and then decide whether a full series gets the green light.
I really enjoyed it. I thought that Anna Friel played the part very well.
