Almost Criminal Amount of Wasted Potential.

I must say the cast is an excellent array of the underrated that I wish I was seeing more of. I've really loved all the leads in other projects. I think the biggest disappointment about this film was the lost potential. There was some solid character development, a unique voice, some very decent, offbeat and funny writing and a strong undercurrent of what could have produced stirring if not, haunting performamces. However the potential was snuffed out by clichéd and melodramatic direction and an all too often awkward script. It's hard for me to get wrapped in a story that's told through forced dialog and promising if not captivating plot lines that were cut off at the knees before they were brought to any enjoyable crest - let alone conclusion. I was left wanting but not in a good way. It's as if the writer said,"Here are these eccentric characters with complicated back stories. CARE ABOUT THEM PLEASE!! Now I'm going to tie up one loose end (the family disconnect) and leave the other dozen completely hanging (Johnny, the granddaughter, the "nurse", etc). And not in an artful "draw your own conclusions" way but more of a clumsy "this screenplay had a deadline and I ran out of time" way. The only actual abortion in See You In Valhalla was the film itself. I chalk in up to inexperience and underdeveloped talent as far as the writer and director are concerned. Any acting shortcomings I believe were a symptom of the miscarriage of their duties. The optimist in me hopes this can be a lesson for them in what NOT to and do and apply those lessons to create better work henceforth. Hopefully, it made the actors a little wiser too.
