The girlfriend

Is it just me or did they drop the ball with the girlfriend? Between Niki's arrival and her departure felt underdeveloped. The "it's her or me" ultimatum seemed like a cop out just to push the story along and open the door for the teacher. The mother slighted her at the funeral, Billy blew her off about having a kid, and then closure is her showing up while he's out on a date to grab her things. Overall, I like the movie, but this character was confusing and almost unnecessary. Other than the "my wife left me" emotional angle, she might as well have not even been part of the story.
