An Appreciation of Juliette Lewis

Before I started this post I reviewed her entry in the IMdB. Jesus Christ! I don't think I've seen such a busy thesian. But I was going to say, I first saw her in 1991's remawke of Cape Fear. In it, she plays the rebellious teenage daughter of the main characters. I wouldn't quite say it was a well fleshed-out part, but she played it to the hilt. At the end Robert DeNiro, as the psychotic, revenge-obsesessed ex-con who has been playing her along and is now intent on raping her in front of her parents, orders her to take out the copy of Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer that he gave her. "I left it home!" she yells. "Oh, I'm real dusappointed to hear that!" he rasps.

"But I memorized all the good parts! she wails. It's been more than 20 years since I've watched that movie, but this scene stil stands out. God, there's been so many roles.

Now, here's Kelly & Cal. I recorded it off of HBO because, by God! It wasn't Texas Chainsaw Massacre]/i] or Night at the Museum. Didn't even know she was in it.

But what a riveting little flick! Had its flaws but, her Kelly was well-acted. Then I saw her name in the credits. (Sorry, I always think of her as a blonde,) By God! That was Juliette Lewis.

Sorry, had to come here. Saw that the Message Board was woeful. Had to do something about it!

I first saw her in the movie " To Young To Die " , a TV movie with Brad Pitt and Michael O"Keefe , in 1990 .. she just blew me away and I have been a fan ever since .. I think that movie was one of the best that she has ever done .. such raw talent at that time .

Have you ever seen that movie you referenced repeated anywhere, anytime?

BTW, are you a Larry McMurtry fan or a Robert Duvall fan?

I haven't seen it lately .. it has been a while ... she was so young then and I had no idea who she was ... but she sure left an impression on me ... and I would have to say that I am a fan of both but , Mr. Duvall wins by a nose .. lol .

The first time I saw her was Christmas Vacation.

reply

Ah, yes, Christmas Vacation. That's the one I remember, but also From Dusk Till Dawn, The Other Sister, August: Osage County, Conviction, Enough and Kelly & Cal.

That was the fist movie I saw her in as well. I think it was just being played on Lifetime or some other cable channel a month or two ago and I watched a it of it again.

She IS really good in Kelly & Cal. What a surprise of a movie--some of the scenes play so true to life especially if you have been a bit lost and trying to find you way as a new mother before.
I don't know if I have seen her in anything I didn't like. But she has grown into a good actor that can do a quiet performance and infuse it with a lot of meaning.

She's a really great actress. She's so natural in Kelly and Cal. Despite having an Oscar nomination I see people constantly saying she's a bad actress.

reply

Surprised no-one's mentioned Kalifornia!!!

Gilbert Grape was the first movie I saw her in. She was incredible in this one.

I first saw her when she was in the series I Married Dora. That was in 1987, the same year year she became emancipated. She was only 14 then, but she left an impression on me and I've followed her career ever since.
