Questions about the ending [Spoilers]

1. Was the dad killed? By whom? I'm guessing the grandmother, but she looked so calm that I couldn't tell.

2. What's with the 'lock the door' comment at the end? They're not all going to kill themselves or something are they??

reply

Yes, the grandmother I thought and 'lock the door' so they/she could dispose of the body without being found out?

reply

Thanks for your reply. That's kind of what I'm thinking too, but wouldn't it be impossible to dispose the body without opening the door (they would have to somehow take it out of the apartment at some stage, right?)? I'm sure 'locking the door' serves as symbolism for the movie in a contextual sense (e.g. symbolises family secrets), but it really doesn't make much sense to me as an action...

reply

It probably is a symbolism for closure.
What's your thoughts on the movie. Did you like it?

reply

I think it was a good story, and the acting is great, but I'll never watch it again. I'm touchy about subjects like rape and pedophilia, and seeing these just triggers negative feelings in me, so this one's a one-time watch only!

reply

(Spoiler) He was, of course, killed by the grandmother. The end is open to more than one interpretation. But for me the last scene, with the family lined up before the grandmother and her command to close the door, is an indication that she killed not to be rid of him, but to take his place.

reply

Good point. That's what i thought about the ending. She's a monster too..

reply

Yes, that´s what I thought too. The grandmother is the boss now.

reply

I don't get that. The look of relief on the grandma's face made me think of her as a kind of victim too. I took 'lock the door' to be her way of saying it's just them now and they need to come together as a family and come up with a plan to cover up what has happened, which would mean covering up all the abuse as well as the murder, which takes the story into even darker - if kinda redemptive and bittersweet, next to what's just gone on - places . . .

reply

That's what I thought too. That she was going to take his place. Her comment to the daughter about taking the blame for drinking the beer showed that she was quite a monster herself.

Very good. But brick not hit back!
