The Best Made for TV movie/biography I've ever seen!

I am an avid movie watcher, and most of the films based on celebrities or known situations are downright awful. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much when I sat down to watch it, but I love fashion, Gina Gershon, and I was following throughout the years Donatella Versace's transformation after her brother's death. Maybe it will seem as if I'm gushing too much, but I'm amazed at how well-written and directed and absolutely GOOD this movie truly is, whether it was made for TV or not. It didn't seem as if it rushed through any information as most of them tend to do, and if a viewer had no clue who Donatella Versace was before seeing it or knew anything about the brand they could still get into it. Most of the time when I've watched lifetime movies in the past they have been awful, poorly written, poorly directed, and you could tell that because the writer and director knew that it was "just" going to be a Lifetime film and nothing on the big screen they didn't really care about the project. It was different with this story. I got the impression that not only did the actors care about their roles and the story they were telling, but the writers and the director put their heart into what they were creating with that story.

Two thumbs up. This could've easily gone to the big screen. It's way better than most big budget productions now anyway.

I agree, normally I think movies based on true stories that Lifetime put on are corny and cheaply made. This movie however was awesome, Gina Gershon was stellar as Donatella. Watching her downward spiral after her brothers death was hard to watch, but makes you understand why she comes off so hard.

I had to do a double take in the beginning when I saw Enrico Calantoni as Gianni...they could have been twins.

Enrico Calantoni and Gianni were mirror images, you are not kidding. From the accents to the dialogue and their gestures, if felt like I was watching the real people.

And I have to admit, I was just happy to see Raquel Welch when she walked into the frame :-).

I totally agree about Enrico Calantoni. The casting of him as Gianni could not have been better. I thought he did an excellent job in this role. Of course, he is excellent in every role he plays.

And as for Raquel Welch, does the woman ever age? Oh my gosh, I swear she looks better now than she did twenty years ago. As my best friend would say, she ages like a fine wine.

i completely agree. I have been a fashionista since high school (I am in my mid-30s now), and let me say that Gina Gershon deserves an Emmy for her performance. She nailed Donatella down to the accent and mannerisms. I didn't see "Gina play Donatella", I saw Donatella onscreen. I was mesmerized by the whole movie. And for the poster who said that the actor who played Gianni was a twin - I couldn't agree more.

This was Lifetime's best movie, in my honest opinion.

No joke, Gina needs an award for this.

I am not a fashion guy And never will be , but wow this movie had me invested the entire time. Was expecting camp and corniness but got a deep and wonderfully acted movie. Gina Gershon was brilliant.

I was thinking the same thing you were! That WAS Donatella I was watching!! I turned 30 early this year and I remember when entertainment and the fashion industry were different. Before reality TV everything wasn't just a gimmick, and it I felt like I was in a time portal with this movie.

They better give Gershon an award. She definitely deserves it.

reply

Absolutely agree too. This was a great movie and Gina was brilliant.

This movie was awesome!! Definately in my top 5, I have never seen Gina Gershon in anything and I have to say she nailed Donatella. I will be looking for this movie to come out and add it to my favorite Lifetime collections. Hopefully Lifetime will continue on this path of making ""Real Life"" stories with the same production as this movie!!

reply

It was really great, I'm glad I watched. So surprising for a Lifetime production.

I've been following Gershon for years. She's been in a lot of things, but I mainly remember her from a film made in the 1990s called This World, Then the Fireworks where she played opposite Billy Zane. I barely remember the movie except that it was weird LOL, but she made an impression on me. I didn't even know anything about this movie until a day or two before it was scheduled to air.

The funny thing was that it came on right after that Anna Nicole Smith movie on Lifetime that was absolutely horrible and rushed, which kind of encouraged my way of thinking not to expect too much from House of Versace. I found that ironic.

reply

Yes it was a good movie. Gianni leaving her out of his will does not make him look good though. She was incredible.
