No mention of Andrew Cunanan by name!

Well by now the entire planet knows that Andrew Cunanan shot and killed
Gianni Versace on 15, July 1997 and yet while watching this movie I
was quite surprised that his name was never mentioned in the script.
The only reference to Versace's killer was when Santo told Donatella
that their brother had been murdered by a serial killer who had also
killed four other men. And today Andrew Cunanan has been
classified as a "spree killer" instead of as a 'serial killer" which
is much more accurate. Perhaps the producers and writers did not
want to distract from Donatella and Gianni by mentioning his killer
by name?

Wasn't one of the things Andrew Cunanan sought was "fame"? Perhaps, the makers of the film thought to deprive him of by not mentioning his name.

That said, do you think the average person knows to make a distinction between a serial killer and spree killer?

Hello and yes I do see your point about how the film makers chose
not to mention Andrew Cunanan by name so as to deprive him of
the fame he had sought. And I suppose that the average American
cannot distinguish between a serial killer versus a spree killer!
And here is one fact about Gianni Versace's killer which I read
on Wikipedia and found quite interesting. While in high school,
his senior year classmates voted Andrew Cunanan "most likely to
be remembered." Not kidding and I find this quite creepy too!

I wonder if at the time of the murder, they thought him to be a serial killer and only later distinguished him as a spree killer? If that was the case, perhaps that is what they told Donatella at the time.

Probably not mentioned in name for fear of upsetting the Versace clan. Andrew Cunanan had been a gay high-class prostitute which isn't really the type of sordid connection anyone would want to be associated with, let alone a powerful fashion brand. The Versace brand always denied that Gianni had ever met Cunanan as did many other of his wealthy clients... yet his FBI file shows that Cunanan did spend quite a few vacations (business trips?) in Italy: Milan, Florence, Venice to name a few of the cities that he visited.

Because Cunanan killed his two ex-boyfriends (the evidence on file shows that he considered one of them to be the love of his life), one of the theories out there is that he thought he had contracted AIDS and sought to murder those he thought might have given it to him.
