So who really won the 3rd fight?

Rocky said it was Apollo, but the way Sly acted in this scene shows in my beliefs that he lied to Donnie not to hurt his feelings. That is my interpretation anyway. What do you guys think?

reply

I was thinking about this last night, and envisioning how it would likely go. Apollo was a better skilled fighter, hands down. What always catapulted Rocky to success in the ring was his motivation to succeed - his heart. With that in mind, I seriously doubt that Rocky, when having a good-natured sparring session with Apollo, would have performed nearly as well as he did when it was a "real" fight. Therefore Apollo would have outboxed Rocky easily.

reply

It was more like a sparring session between 2 friends so I doubt either was going all out to destroy the other, Apollo probably just danced about and jabbed his way to a win with Rocky obviously holding back, lacking any real motivation for the bout.

reply

Friendly sparring is not the same thing as a boxing match and I believe Rocky would have won had they had a real boxing match. He had just beaten Lang inside 3 rounds and had the potential to eventually beat Drago and I feel his winning the race on the beach with Apollo symbolized that he had evolved beyond Apollo. And unlike Rocky 2 it would have been a win with only moderate difficulty, it would not have been neck/neck close.

You know what would have been neat? If they had filmed the sparring match back in 1982 but put it on the back shelf as a "deleted scene" and waited till Creed to show it, and have it show Rocky totally outboxing Apollo then have the camera fade from the memory and show Rocky's face and have Rocky lie and say Apollo won just to make Adonis feel good about his dad.

reply

It was more like a sparring session. Honestly I won't give much importance to that "fight".

reply

Agreed and I don't think Rocky placed a lot of importance on it.🐭

reply

Pretty much what jaroto said. If you have have long time friends and get into a match like that no matter what sport. Its really just lets have fun until we're both tired. No one won the last match.

I remember me and my friend pretty much passed out on a basketball court. We couldnt decide the winner because we just played till the sun went down.

reply

I feel like the winner of that fight is basically irrelevant/unimportant. I don't think Rocky would have cause to or benefit from lying to Adonis about a private fight especially since Adonis had no relationship or particularly warm fuzzy feelings about his father (although...does Rocky know that much at the point they have this discussion? I don't remember).

I believe Apollo won. I think Rocky's demeanor when answering was more or less him being caught off guard by how much private information Donnie seemed to have about those events. Just my opinion though. :)

reply

Their secret third fight was more of a sparring session. And perhaps maybe Rocky allowed Apollo to win partly as a thank you for helping him to avenge his loss to Clubber.

reply

Rocky and Apollo were just goofing around. It was not a legitimate "fight". If Stallone added that bit about Apollo winning the "third fight" it was just something he made up to add something interesting to his new movie.

reply

we will never know for sure but my opinion is that if they had had a real 3rd fight Rocky would have won with only moderate difficulty. His passing Apollo on the beach race to me symbolized that he had evolved beyond Apollo and he beat Lang in 3 rounds. I think he had evolved beyond Apollo by the time he defeated Lang and was the superior fighter by that point.

reply

I agree. I think he said that Apollo won because it would inspire him.

reply

I thought it was funny that Rocky was so surprised baby Creed had heard of the fight when there was that painting of it from the Rocky III credits hanging in his restaurant right behind the kid's head.

"Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie son?"

reply

Nobody won the third fight. It was not real and it never happened. As a theatrical matter, they did not want us to know who won. It's like a ton of movies with an ambiguous ending and we are just never meant to know what happened. Rocky's statement in this movie that Apollo won can't be given much weight under the circumstances.

reply

Apollo won. Rocky can only beat an opponent when he goes Full Rocky on them, and he never would have opened up that can of whoop ass on his bestie. Apollo was a properly skilled boxer. In a friendly sparring match of scoring points, Rocky wouldn't stand a chance.
