About Apollo . . . (Spoilers!!!!)

OK, I really liked the movie.
I just hated the fact that they made Apollo "unfaithful" to his wife.
Adonis could have been the youngest child of the Creed family that ran away and was presumed dead. He decided to turn his life around and fall in Fathers footsteps. He starts beating other boxes in the rings with his strategy fitness and charm.
What made Apollo such a great character was his intelligence, charm, sportsmanship and his care for his friends. Obviously he had a an ego check in Rocky 2. However, in Rocky 3 Apollo proved to really be a good guy. Adrian also really grew to love Apollo as she said in Rocky 4. "I care about both of you."

Prior to the Drago fight, Apollo seemed to be having some type of crisis in that he was no longer on top of the Boxing World. Maybe during that time he was feeling sorry for himself and fooled around a bit. Even good people can make mistakes. Muhammad Ali who Apollo Creed was based on was very unfaithful to his wives.

And outside of his interactions with Rocky we didn't get to know Apollo that well over the course of the series.

But Adonis's illegitimacy is central to his character's emotional struggle. He carries it with him like a stain on his very being (hence the line at the end where he said he wanted to prove to himself that his existence wasn't some sort of abominable mistake). If you take that out of the equation and make him Apollo's legitimate son with Mary Ann, his story isn't nearly as compelling. And Mary Ann taking him in and raising him as her own son gives her additional depth, too. I do wish the movie would have kept the small deleted scene where Donny asks Rocky if he knew that Apollo had been unfaithful. Considering the movie was already well over 2 hours, I don't think that extra minute of footage would have slowed it down any.

I like your plot way better than this movie's. I agree Apollo was a good man. This movie kind of ruins Rocky 1-3 movies for me. Apollo was a cheating bastard?! Same thing happened when I watched 'The Force Awakens' it ruined 'Return of the Jedi' for me. I thought my heroes lived happily ever after, but they were really living miserably this whole time. For now I will pretend these movies don't exist.

Rocky 1-4 correction

It's not like 1-4 had some really great love story between Apollo and his wife like they did for Rocky/Adrian. And it's not like those movies painted Apollo like some sort of saint either. I'm surprised the man only had one illegitimate son. I agree with what you said about The Force Awakens, but Creed doesn't do anything to ruin Rocky 1-4 for me because it doesn't seem out of character for Apollo. Rocky V is the one I used to think ruined the first 4 movies, but since Rocky wound up doing OK for himself through Rocky Balboa and Creed (though certainly not as well off as he was) it's not so bad. But back when it was the final installment I just pretended it never happened.

"Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie son?"

That's an interesting point. (I do tend to agree with the other commentators here that this was necessary to the story line..) I felt that this was simply a very realistic part of the high-profile, celebrity, sports world. This seems to cross cultures, generation etc. Some of our most celebrated figures from the past have done the same thing. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, etc. So I did not have a problem with this part of the movie. I did, however, have a problem with the clip from ESPN (Pardon the Interruption) where they talked about this issue. Those guys have good judgment and they would not bring up the infidelity part, in part out of discretion and in part because having an illegitimate child is not uncommon.
