Did some of you thought Balboa killed Apollo?

Maybe I'm off but I wondered during the movie if someone not familiar with the franchise thought that it was Balboa that killed Creed in the ring? I may be wrong but I thought the movie didn't make it clear (until one sentence at the end).

When Adonis first meets Rocky, he asks him about a secret third fight where Rocky says that Apollo won that fight. This would suggest there weren't any further fights between them, and so Rocky would not have been the one who killed Apollo in the ring.

But you ask a fair question, and it will be interesting to hear from folks who watched this film without having seen any of the previous films.

Thank you for your answer. Good point. Hope some more people will join the discussion!

He said both in the restaurant and during the final fight he should've stopped the fight with Apollo no real reason for anyone to believe he killed him

reply

Ok thanks. I think I'll watch that restaurant scene again.

He should have thrown the damn towel!

reply

Well he did throw the towel, just 1 super killing hit too late :)

reply

Apollo was on his last legs (literally), but still had the presence of mind to instruct his corner NOT to throw in the towel. He was proud and that's what cost him his life.

reply

Apollo's mind had just gotten beat in by Drago. Rocky should have thrown the damn towel.

If Apollo had ODed on drugs and told Rocky not to take him to detox, should Rocky have obeyed?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

reply

How would he have stopped it?
Drago wasn't obeying the ref, he
would have just kept on slugging...

reply

No, the "final fight" between Rocky and Apollo would have been nothing more than a friendly spar. Rocky would be the first to admit that Apollo was a technically better fighter than himself. Thus the "he won" response. But as we know from the franchise, world titles are won on more than technical skill.

Apollo died because he knew he had over-reached against Drago, but didn't want to appear a quitter.🐭

reply

Even if someone sees Creed without having seen Rocky IV, I think they can kind of figure out that Rocky was in Apollo's corner for a fight that turned fatal.

And Drago would have had to be physically restrained by many people. He was set to beat Apollo to death regardless of towels being thrown in. I mean he even shoves the ref out of the way when he apparently is moving in to at least check on Apollo's condition or possibly even stop the fight.

reply

It wouldn't take that many people. He's not Hulk Hogan.

Are you serious? Lots of people have not seen the movies, especially in non US countries, not even talking about the new generations, kids that haven't even heard of Rocky.

reply

No, stopping a fight is the referee's job, Rocky was only Apollo's corner man (or how do they call it), he could have thrown in the towel... and? It doesn't change anything.

reply

Throwing in the towel ends the fight. It's a form of surrender.

reply

That's an urban legend.

reply

That was cool! Thanks. I never really thought about it before.

reply

Regardless, Rocky felt like he could've ended it (though I agree that he's probably wrong), and he feels guilty

He's just that kinda guy

I sometimes wonder whether that's the most ridiculous part of the franchise - that someone with that big of a heart and that much of a "nice guy" could be a champion boxer. He clearly wasn't much good as a loan shark enforcer

reply

Throwing in the towel will usually cause a ref to stop a fight in real life. It's not a guarantee as it's always at the ref's discretion. That said, Rocky would know he at least tried had he thrown in the towel, and it would have been all on the ref.

reply

He pretty much did, he had the towel in his hand when Drago was smacking him around the like a rag doll
