Final fight *Obvious spoiler warning*

Just finished watching the movie. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm divided over whether the ending of the fight was a cop-out. I mean, normally, having the hero of the story win by knockout in the final round is the cop-out, but perhaps because we technically haven't seen that ending to a Rocky movie since 1985, I was kinda missing it and hoping for Creed to knock Conlan out, especially since the previous film in the series ALSO ended with the underdog losing on points but proving he's no pushover. So my reaction was almost "Ugh, not this again".

I also think they built up "Pretty" Conlan to be enough of an a**hole that the audience would have relished a knockout. I didn't buy that Conlan immediately turned into an honorable fighter (referring to his kind words to Creed) not one round after he was still showboating like a jacka**. By contrast, Apollo's gradually increasing respect for Rocky over the course of the first three films felt much more organic and believable.

Not sure if this alternate ending would have written the story into a corner, though, assuming Creed would win the title. Anyway, minor nitpick in what was an otherwise great movie!

There are many arrogant guys in sports, but most of them show respect with talented guys.. Conlan's reaction made sense to me. He disliked Adonis because he was having the opportunity thanks to his last name. The guy proved to be a real deal and was the first to knock him. And Conlan was probably facing jail time, so there may not be a rematch anytime soon. I can easly piture him being humble after his "last" fight with the new tough guy.

Conlan's on-screen show of respect at the end was very similar to the way the real-life boxer (Tony Bellew) seems to operate. I saw a fight recently where after the knockout, he got down onto the canvas to embrace the guy he'd just put there. And then just the other day, this: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/video/2016/nov/30/david-haye-tony-bellew-press-conference-boxing-video

Coogler wanted to go with the going the distance theme of the first Rocky and Rocky Balboa. At the end Adonis proving himself meant more than a title win. But if Creed II happens you can bet Adonis will be the champion by the end.

Adonis himself didn't necessarily need to WIN the fight. He desired respect and feared tarnishing his father's name. He gained both of those by the end of the night.

Conlan on the other hand, as much of a jerk as he was, had children to worry about. He's in a desperate spot himself. Despite winning the fight, he's about to lose his freedom. It's the ultimate irony.

Conlan NEEDED the victory more, and Creed needed a different kind of victory.

^^This. I didn't hate Conlay at all...in fact I was rooting for him for a lot of the last fight. He's facing retirement as a loser and everyone wants to leave at the top of their game.

I do 100% agree and that was my reaction too. I did seem like a cop-out ending to the fight. I would have also liked to see Creed KO Conlan. I did not mind seeing the split decision in 'Rocky Balboa" since it was so great to see another Rocky movie & the returning actors/characters
