Thought the first episode was terrific

The reviews have been mixed, but I was intrigued for that hour. I think if this were touted as a UK production (as it mainly is) and put on PBS, it would be getting rave reviews.

I agree. It was good.

The editing and acting seems quite sub-par in my opinion.

When the guy was running down the sidewalk and the pedestrians were standing on the curb waiting for the light to change the one woman stepped aside to make room for him to stand there and he was still way down the block... Poor editing.

Huldu,

This looks like a UK production, even though it technically isn't. I think the production values being so non-Hollywood have thrown off people. That's why I say it would probably fit in better on PBS.

I actually like the washed-out-color look from the 1980s.

I like John Rhys in what I've seen him in (as a vampire in both Being Human, U.K. and Da Vinci's Demons).

I've never been that impressed with Jodie Whittaker, but I like her here.

Yeah, i went in not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. First episode was pretty interesting. Not as gripping as THE AMERICANS, but still for a January mid-season debut it's not bad!

I thought it was 110% better than the americans which to me is an overhyped pile of crap. everything in this show felt far more realistic and plausible. and it being a limited run series based on layed-out events it also shouldn't get side-tracked the way the americans does with all of the husband and wife relationship stuff which is the last something I want out of a supposed spy show.

remember, if you don't have anything nice to say ...you're probably a butthole

reply

See, i find the relationship stuff fascinating on THE AMERICANS. How much more undercover can you get as a spy then having kids with someone you don't even know and then raising the kids in the very country and system which you are openly fighting against?

I dunno ... Five minutes in, when the Heroic Lead Character delivered the (horribly cliched) "this is what we do" line, I cringed. Later on, when the same character's husband gave his "you're more of a man than I am" speech to her, I got a little nauseated -- but only temporarily, because during the same scene we got the comic relief of learning that the actress playing that lead character can't pronounce "compartmentalize."

Those are just a few examples of problems, but overall ... meh. I'll check it again next week, but so far I'm not getting my hopes up.

reply

Yeah it's a shame it wasn't on PBS since we;d actually have gotten to see it all (And, ironically, it probably would've gotten better ratings too and probably not been started on such a dumb premiere date).

ABC has fallen through the floor regarding ordering quality drama recently, the network made a really poor decision in cancelling The Assets which was a huge mistake.
The shows scheduling was also a disaster, almost as though they wanted the series to fail.

ABC UP YOUR GAME.
