Here is something some of you may enjoy after viewing this mini series. Haven't seen it so can't say yea or nay.

It got really good reviews when it aired. Tried to find it but no one is streaming it.

Has anyone seen the Timothy Hutton version? How does it compare with The Assets?

It is a lot better than "The Assets"

"The Assets" is a lot like an expanded version of the Timothy Hutton movie, with one exception - the insertion of the blonde protagonist. I hated her. The Timothy Hutton movie had Jeanne Vertifeulle (sp?) as the head of the mole hunt, and she was like the JV in this movie - calm, professional, and objective. She was also shown to be the one to figure out to look at Ames' finances.

The blonde agent in the miniseries drove me up the wall because she was what every feminist criticizes about Hollywood portrayals of women - emotional, subjective, and borderline histrionic. Her pursuit of Ames was embarrassing - "I discarded the agents I thought were trustworthy" and the stupid numbers list thing - all purely subjective and the worst kind of counterintelligence.

If she had been removed from the miniseries and JV left in charge of the mole hunt team the miniseries would have been a hundred times better.

You do realize that the blond was based on a real person, that she was involved in catching Ames and was coauthor of the book the mini series was based on, right?

I wish Netflix had the movie, they don't.

reply

The blond woman was real-life CIA agent Sandra Grimes, who also helped hunt down Ames. BTW, The Assets is now streaming on Netflix, for anyone who's interested. And there was nothing "histronic" about how she was played, either.
