The ending is sad, but no surprise. The boy was not old enough, or strong enough, to live away from his mother -- nor did he have a viable alternative -- so he decides to play by her rules. He was obviously conflicted in how he felt about her. In one scene, he tells her he will take care of her (when she's old?). At the end, he tells her he hates her -- and she says, ditto.
What's strange is that the mother seems to be in a constant state of anger at the boy. Sure, she's worried that he will be a maricon, and she is ignorant about homosexuality, but to let that dominate her feelings about her son seemed an extreme reaction. She wasn't a religious person (the origin of a lot of homophobia), so it was difficult to tell what her issue was.
Her character was sexy and not hard on the eyes, so I enjoyed her performance, but it is easy to see how her innate bitchiness would drive any man/boy loco.
Martha Washington was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.
