Really? My jaw literally dropped when I saw them use that. They had to have known they were in first place, if not at least within the first three. Makes me feel like they have no idea how to play this game. The goal is not to get first every leg, it's to stay in the race for as long as possible. Using the express pass when there are not other teams around you when you are in first and you haven't even checked out the other detour is just stupid.
Yes it was pretty stupid of them. They were first and basically at the head of pack. There was no reason to use the pass. They'll probably regret it hugely later.

Knowing what we do now, I'm glad they used it. It got them 1st place and a prize. Having it wouldn't have helped them in Halifax. They called ahead, finished everything, and still had to wait hours for the passport to be flown back in from Toronto.
