Togo Igawa as Gotetsu

Christian Howard as Ken Masters is a big oddity since Ken Masters is Asian in the official Capcom cannon (specifically 3/4 Japanese 1/4 white).

For a series advertizing itself on accuracy it really stand out like a sore thumb that they are continuing with the misunderstanding that Ken is white.

Well it definitely seems to be more accurate than the past two films and at this rate.....That's arguably only strike one since they've gotten the races of Ryu, Gouken, Gouki, Goutetsu, and Sayaka are all still Asian.

With that said, it's hard to say whether or not Capcom is retconning Ken's race since this is going to be treated as a definitive approach to meshing elements from the Street Fighter Anime spinoffs, comics, and games together with Capcom tagging their name on this...

Capcom isn't working closely with these series. Proof of that is the fact that Joey Ansah decided to go at one point via Kickstarter to get funding for it. Had Capcom been working closely with them then the money issue to make the series wouldn't have ever come up (compare that to the production of Mortal Kombat Legacy). The deal that was made was one where Joey Ansah and his group get the rights to make these series with a limited amount of time attached to it whether they ended up making the series or not. So Ansah and his group are free to do whatever it is they want to do with it.

^ Either way, I can see Capcom potentially retconning elements of it into the Canon depending on how well-received it ends up being....which I have a good feeling it wont disappoint on in terms of quality.

If Capcom wanted to retcon Ken as white instead of Asian they would've done it years ago. Ken was portrayed as white in the first Hollywood Street Fighter movie and also in the American cartoon series that was based on it. Neither times did Capcom take after them.

I think it's an oversight by Ansah out of ignorance. This is ignorance is in regards of thinking that "anime characters look white". I saw an interview with Ansah sometime ago that really bothered me where he was basically saying that.

His somewhat stock argument seemed to be that "you can't win" when it comes to that because if they got a full Asian for certain characters some would whine because they don't look the part but if you cast full white then you'll be labelled racist. Atleast that's how he felt people would perceive these things back in 2010.

Ken's casting still seemed to be out of ignorance to his canonical race as well as playing to the general perception of Ken as a full Caucasian due to the blond hair and blue eyes(despite Ken being implied to be a natural brunette/have Raven hair judging from his black eyebrows) and because Christian Howard's his friend whom many feel look the part.

Ken's eyes are not blue. They're brown. His eyebrows also don't match his hair color and that's on purpose to make it clear that Ken dyes his hair. And his hair color has changed from red to blonde which also makes it obvious Ken dyes his hair.

Howard doesn't look the part because he isn't Asian. Only those that think Ken is white would think Howard looks like Ken.

It's a real shame because I was honestly looking more forward to this than Mortal Kombat Legacy. Ansah's comments about how he really wanted to bring those fantastical elements from Street Fighter and do them with respect and credibility is the opposite of Tancharoen's desire to "Nolanize" Mortal Kombat. He made me excited because it could potentially prove to those post-Nolan that removing fantasy out of a fantasy story just cause it's live action isn't the way to go. However, Ansah's continuing the error that Ken is white while Tanchareon is correcting errors in casting such as hiring Asians to play Scorpion and Sub-Zero and in the second season of Mortal Kombat Legacy by getting an Asian to play Raiden.
