I never knew they were killers

Am I mixing up the people in the bible? All this time I grew up thinking Joseph and his sons were supposed to be saints and this movie portrayed them as ruthless killers. Where did my studies go wrong? Am I thinking of the wrong sons?

Jacob and his sons not joseph, I wouldnt call them saints but from Jacobs 10 sons rose the ten tribes of Isreal the 10 tribes were named after Jacobs 10 sons
Yes they were Killers but the Bible is full of Killers.

My Bible History is a bit rusty so If I got it wrong someone please correct me.

Well, Jacob's sons killed men who hated God, Canaanites hated the true God.

Growing up, Jacob nor his sons were presented to me as "good" people. I wasn't given an idealized portrait of biblical figures. I can't recall everything off the top of my head but I remember three things about these men:
1) Jacob schemed with his mother to trick his disabled father & screw over his brother
2) Two of the sons murderer all the men & enslaved the women & children of Shechem
3) Teenaged Joseph was sold into slavery by his jealous older brothers

#3 is spot on, BluNat. It's all accurate. The Old Testament is full of anger, rage, rape, murder, violence, revenge and genocide. If you're unaware of that, you haven't read the Good Book lately. For that matter, there's a recipe in it for an abortifacient drink (that's a drug that brings on abortion). It also tells us that life doesn't begin until breath is drawn at birth.

Hebrews are the Chosen People of the Lord. Of course they (we) can do no wrong. Don't forget that Jesus Christ was Jewish. Did that slip your mind? 

Some things you just can't ride around...

If the Old Testament teaches that life doesn't begin until breath is drawn at birth can you explain this scripture:

“If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. - Exodus 21:22-25

Sounds to me that unborn children are just as precious to God as newborns are.

You either have an incorrect translation or you are creatively editing to make a point, the correct translation of the HEBREW (you know, the original language the Torah was written in) is as follows:

And if men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow, he shall be surely fined, according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

Any man that causes miscarriage shall pay a FINE, because of the loss of the property to the husband. It is only if the woman is harmed will they have to pay like for like.

Please don't over sentimentalise the Bible with words such as 'precious' the texts are full of murder, rape and genocide. If anything The Red Tent whitewashes (as much as I love the book). But for petes sake, read the Hebrew Translation, anything done in English is very much creative editing to fit into a much later agenda.

It's interesting that you only quoted verse 22 but paraphrased verses 23-25. My reply included all of the verses. It would be nice to see the rest of those Hebrew verses.

BluNat - Actually if the entire account is read in context it is Esau who was going to screw over Jacob. Years earlier Esau sold his birthright to Jacob but when their father was about to die and pronounce his blessings Esau was intending to take the birthright anyway. Rebekah knew and thus told Jacob to go in and get what was rightfully his.

reply

The Bible has more murder, betrayal and cruelty than any other book in the world from any time.

reply

Have you ever stop to think it was all in God's purpose what Jacob done , being chosen over Esau? and the events of his children?

reply

Well, Joseph's brothers were willing to beat their brother, sell him as a slave, condemn him to (as far as they knew) a life of physical and emotional abuse and lie to their father. With those precedents I would hardly qualify them as saints
