Howard Stark's Scene (spoiler)

If Howard used the acronym "SHIELD" here, how come Phil Coulson kept using the full name in Iron Man, and explaining that the agents haven't come up with a shorter title yet?

My answer is...Coulson probably wanted to keep the name "SHIELD" as an organization in still underwraps at the time...so he used the full name thinking "hey no one has heard of the name SHIELD since Howard Stark formed the organization....so to call ourselves something and keep our organization underwraps and in the shadows til we're ready to come out..we'll call it by the full name no one will think to call us SHIELD because so far SHIELD doesn't OFFICIALLY exist" and when he said "yea we're still working on that" (RE the name of the organization) he was just BSing to dodge a bullet is all.

The "real world" response to this is that it would simply be a surprise reveal to the average Marvel fan. That way at the end, when he says to just call it SHIELD, the fan could go... "Oh wow! I know that name from the comics!".

But the "story" reason would be, Coulson was just being cool.

I'm straight up lovable, son.
