They didn't even TRY.

I really wanted to like this flick.

The first half was rather good, concentrating mostly on character development and not so much music. Luke Perry did a great job in his role, as did the whole cast.

But man, when they finally got to the big scene at the end, it was like a bad episode of "The Monkees."

The kid shows up for the contest, not having registered, and the guy in charge just lets him go up on stage.

Then the kid puts on a drum loop via his laptop (which of course he didn't even plug in) and it starts looping. He starts playing, then stops for a while, then starts again- yet magically, when he gets to the chorus, the beat changes and that bloody laptop knows exactly when to play each fill! And there's even a bassline!

then the girl gets onstage and starts singing. We hear her clearly, but of course SHE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A MICROPHONE !

Then the famous guy just walks onstage. Somehow he managed to enter the club, with his guitar, and no one noticed him.

And the continue with their song, which magically now has at least 6-8 voices singing harmony, yet only 2 people on stage singing .....

Gimme a break.

The 'big ending' wasn't what we were supposed to focus on--we know by now the kid develops his music skills, is no longer a coward. And it brings Perry's character out of his own shell too

So they glossed over it.

With Perry's passing though, the 'final' room for his character seems haunting. I had problems watching it I don't think it was supposed to convey that when the film was originally made/released.
