Are average Americans really that fat?

I've been to the US once 15 years ago, but I didn't get the impression they were drastically fatter than us Europeans. But in this movie, 95% are Michael Moore lookalikes. Is this really how Americans look nowadays?

reply

yup yup! *burp*

Must be nice to come from a country where you can marvel at fat people like they're sideshow freaks.

oarch: I've been IN the US 15 years now. And YES.

reply

Yes Americans are fat. Obesity is on the rise.

If you go out into the small towns there are a lot of heffers who don't really eat right. But if you go to the more upper class areas fatties are much less populated. And remember, this movie took place in small towns for the most part or poorer areas. But yes, it is something I noticed too and I live in America. I don't live in a poor area but I noticed when I drive to a poorer area there are fatties roaming around. I suppose they don't find getting fit a priority, or they are much more friendly to each other so they never insult each other on the way they look so they just don't care. haha. Let me put it this way, if everybody around you is fit and looks good, you are more likely going to want to be fit and look good, if everybody around you is fat and doesn't give a sh**, you probably won't mind being fat and won't give a sh**. It almost makes you want to be fat and not give a sh** so you fit in.

Some of it is what one can afford as well. Junk food/fast food is cheap. If one is poor, it might be harder to afford healthier food. So, one gets what one can afford. Mind you, there are ways of eating healthy that are inexpensive of course. But it's just easier to go to a McDonald's then try to shop on a budget when one can't afford much.

I think it's more of a question of healthy habits.

1. Eat decent food.
2. Eat reasonable portions.
3. Get a moderate amount of exercise.

If every one did this, there would be very little obesity.

What do you think?

_______

Scarlett Johansson is Miss Peel, Clark Gregg is John Steed, but who the heck are the others?!

reply

I think very clearly. Thank you.

Like many said, it really just depends on WHERE in America you go to. The movie was filmed in poorer neighborhoods and the population in those cities has much more than looking healthy to worry about (crime, etc). If it were filmed in, say, Orange County, Hollywood, Washington DC, New York, etc, you'd have a much different impression of what "Americans look like." Pretty much same goes for cities in Europe, one city will look 100% opposite of another, so we couldn't judge one film based in a poor 3rd world European city as being representative of all of Europe.

The comment about junk food is cheaper is the truth. Many Americans are struggling with finances so they are buying the bad foods because that's what they can afford.

reply

We're not fat. We're just big boned.

In all seriousness, it's the cheap fast food. Healthy food is too expensive for most of us.
