Confused About Darwan's Background? Terrorist In India?

When he was describing to Wendy how he got to USA, he seemed to imply that he was thought to be a terrorist in India, and his family was terrorized and harmed by police and he needed political asylum, because he's a Sikh...in India? Did anyone else get that impression, that his backstory made no sense? I watched that part twice and did not get it.

It can make perfect sense to those who read news or history from other countries, general but also political. His backstory was the same that happened to multiple thousands of Sikhs, which is why they had to emigrate to other countries such as the UK and the US. That's how he was accepted as a political asylum seeker in the US, which is not easy to do. He wasn't just an "average" immigrant, as it were.

Quick history: Sikhs are a different ethnic group within a majority population, just like the hundreds of others in what is present day India, Hindustan of the past. The majority ethnic groups persecuted them because of their different religious beliefs among other things. Like in the USA now for certain groups calling for equality and justice, majority Indians branded Sikhs terrorists to justify violent action and continued abuse of them, both in their own minds and for world observers. The Sikhs search for places to safely live can be compared to Protestant Puritans leaving Catholic England but Sikhs (unlike the pilgrims) have an entirely peaceful belief system and way of life that isn't damaging to others.

Makes perfect sense, and the character explained it simply and well.

Sikhs live in Kashmir which is sandwiched between northern India (mostly Hindu) and Pakistan (mostly Moslem). They would like to free just like the Kurds who are sandwiched between Iraq and Turkey.

India will never let go of Kashmir because it is valuable in resources and beautiful. India lists any resistance of Kashmir as being terrorists.

I don't have a dog in this fight, not being there. So berating me will fall on deaf ears.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else
