Was Viviane pregnant?

As much as I liked the film, the actress's (seeming) pregnancy was a major distraction.

I originally suspected that the character 'Viviane' was pregnant and that her pregnancy would factor into the story.

It became increasingly apparent, however, that it was Ronit Elkabetz (who played Viviane and also co directed and wrote the film) who might have been pregnant.

Her decision to also play the lead, however, nearly compromises her own film.

We're supposed to believe that this a chaste woman trying to exit a loveless marriage - but there is the constant suggestion that she has been receiving 'love' outside the marriage (possibly with the lawyer).

Given the film''s time frame, this obviously proves to be impossible.

It's possible, of course, that I'm completely mistaken and that the actress has a distended abdomen or permanent bloat. If so, I apologize for any offense caused.

But I don't think I am mistaken - as evident by the fact she is constantly trying to hide her growing tummy with her hands or body posture.

You might think I'm being an idiot for drawing this seemingly irrelevancy to your attention - but it is not me that draws attention to her (presumed) pregnancy in the first place by trying to divert our attention away through sleight of hand and/or narrative considerations.

I saw this with 5 other people, and none of us noticed her "growing tummy." And the actress' bio does not list any children so it does not appear the actress was pregnant. I don't believe we were supposed to think she was pregnant, but I agree that the movie strongly suggests she saw at least one man:

My friends and I believe that she WAS at the cafe with a man she was in a relationship with, and the lawyer only said it was him to protect her. Her quest was difficult enough even if the rabbis believed she was a chaste woman. If they knew she was committing adultery, she would have lost any chance to win a divorce. The irony is that the case can be made that she only had to commit adultery because this case dragged on so long. Is she really supposed to put her life on hold for years and years?

I guess for you it did. It never occurred to me she was pregnant at all.

Did you expect her to be built and dressed like a stripper?

That's exactly my observation. I was sure she was pregnant in the beginning of the movie and that got me pretty confused. By the end of the film her stomach didn't seem all that big anymore. It also seemed to me that she was hiding behind her posture and hands. Who knows? Maybe the clothes didn't sit right:)

i too noticed her tummy first when they have the second hearing after being ordered to live together for some time. I though she would have got pregnant during "live in trial" ordered by the court. But it turned out she never was supposed to be pregnant in the movie and ignored it completely. And not to mention thoroughly enjoyed the film.
