didn't understand the final shot

I must have really missed something, but I didn't understand what was going on with that final shot.

(minor spoiler)
The camera's POV was near to floor-level, following a pair of feet walking along for half a minute or so. And the movie ends and the credits start to roll.

So what was that all about? And whose feet were those? (I'm guessing it's Viviane, but am not really sure).
Thanks

Those were her feet, walking into the room where the husband was waiting...and the door closes. Presumably to carry out the deal that was struck earlier; ie; sex in trade for divorce:(

She is walking into the room where she will finally receive the gett, NOT to have sex with her husband. The deal he forced her to agree to was that she would receive the divorce only if she promised to never have another man.

reply

dmartincannon is correct.

At first, I thought the same as littlekaren, but then she says—and she knows him well enough to know this is what he wants without him having to say it—"There will never be another after you."

Which tells us a lot about her husband.

And my friend and I thought that she has no intention of keeping her promise. Now that she got the divorce, what's he going to do if she gets with another man?

We thought that she plans to because we see that she wears red toenail polish and slinky sandals in that one scene, and takes down her hair. The movie was letting us know she has sexual desires. Also we thought that the man she was seen with in the cafe was NOT her lawyer, he just said so to protect her.

You are wrong about taking her hair down; you must understand what it is to be a religious woman. After getting married a religious woman must have her hair covered, with a scarf or a wig or a hat. In the beginning she didn't cover her hair, but she did have it pinned close to her head. Also the clothes she was wearing in the beginning were more modest - her chest was not showing. As time went by, both her clothes became more open and her hair was not so closely pinned up - she was dressing more secularly. When she fully let her hair down, notice that her blouse showed cleavage - that was a very strong statement again religious ways - she was fed up!

There were also shots of her legs - the final shot that that of a middle aged or order woman, heavier calves. Her shoes were more comfortable, slip-ons. She probably did not get her 'gett'.

reply

That wasn't the deal. So the ending makes no sense.

I wondered too, then remembered what he said, or what she had to do (or not do) to be granted the divorce.

That movie was an eye opener, for sure, if that's really the norm - and I assume it is.

reply

The feet were definintely Viviane's as she was wearing the Espadrilles in a former scene. I didn't get it either, and also thought that she agreed to have sex with her husband in exchange for the *get*. Outrageous either way.

Surely, her feet are following the instructions she was given in court earlier about what to do after receiving the divorce papers into her cupped hands. We picture her carrying the divorce papers under her arm as she laves the courtroom, but see only her feet.

reply

I thought it was symbolic of her moving on with her life and being able to make her own path.

I thought she was going to jump off a roof...

And she's not really making much a "path" of her own when her life's still dictated by her ex.

The final shot of Vivane's feet expresses her continuing submissive position, still aligned to her husband's patriarchal ownership of her. The shot is of an obedient woman's feet that are decidedly not free but following the same old well-worn dutiful pattern laid out in the film.

The curling toes of the hair-down scene that momentarily break the moral code, are in the end properly in tow.

I watched and re-watched the ending 4 times. There is no hint in their verbal agreement of "no more men" and there is no hint in the bunny slipper-bare legs-door closing ending.
It's driving me nuts. Somebody must know.

Straight after the conversation Vivienne and Elisha had, they walked down the hall gathering witnesses - so I took it that the divorce finally proceeded immediately at that point.

So the final scene, her walking into a room in which a man was waiting? That aligns with what I suspected of the deal they hinted at - sex, one last time. It seemed to be an ownership thing - he didn't want to lose her. She told him that their would be no one else (perhaps to ease his mind so he may allow the divorce). Plus - remember the specific line he froze at, while trying to grant the divorce.. I think sexual ownership was a major driver for Elisha.

reply

We cannot be sure if Viviane enters the court or leaves it. I also guess that Elisha expected last sex and sexual loyalty from Viviane. It seems also possible that she enters the court and doesn't succeed for the next time as Elisha behaves like the gardener's dog that neither eats cabbage itself nor lets anybody else. I hope, however that Viviane leaves the court as a free woman after the process. Bearing in mind Israeli divorce practices, I think it is possible that she plans to keep her word given to Elisha what is the price for her freedom.
