The official description was that on a rainy night, when he wasn't doing much business in his second-hand clothing store, 3 young African American men came in and then started to walk out with merchandise. Siegel went to try to stop them, but he suffered a heart attack (probably induced by the stress) and collapsed. He was not shot, nor had he been struck. However, that doesn't make as good a story. There's a new biography of Siegel and Shuster that covers it pretty well, with the actual death certificate and police report.
