What's wrong with likeable characters?

So, everybody in this film is a douche apart from the main kid....who then beats a dog tied up in a bag hung from a tree with a big stick. FFS! I'm out!

I'm sick to death of watching more and more modern films where there are no likeable or even relatable characters. I'm not saying this can't be used to good effect demonstrating the fallacy of black and white morality and the need to have good and bad guys, but more often than not this just makes me not want to carry on watching a film. I don't like anybody in this story and I'm not really invested as I've seen it all before a million times over. Shall I carry on watching out of sheer boredom or maybe cheer on an animal abuser? Off!

I thought the girl (Jasmine?) was likable and not cruel at all. Akira seemed like a good guy as well. Granted, that makes most of the characters bad guys, but I wouldn't say it was 100% unlikable or relatable. In fact, I think all but the two antagonists and the two jerks on the dune buggy were relatable in some way.
I've been a cub scout
I've dealt with being called a freak for no discernible reason
I've had a dog and
I've felt helpless when bad things have happened to that dog.

It's not all that bad
