Has the 'Vincent Piazza and Michael Pitt' thing happened before?

It's so odd that two actors who had worked together in Boardwalk Empire should decide to do movies on the same topic. Apparently Piazza and the writer approached Scorsese during production of Boardwalk Empire and gave him the script of The Wannabe and he loved it. But, after Andy Garcia and Michael Pitt had already done this, and arguably did a much better job, I wonder why Scorsese exec produced The Wannabe? It just seems odd. I can't think of another instance when two movies about the same real life event were made quite closely together, with cast members who'd worked together on a hit series. Has something similar ever occurred before, where two movies about the same event were made, with actors who were connected to one another via a show or other movies?
