I think the fact It is based on Chinese ghost stories that most of the world have never heard of. Another difficulty is, the first story is borderline avant garde with its start and finish. The second is a horrific and disgusting story with VERY likable main characters. It switches from lighthearted to tragic constantly, western audiences tend to not like such depth. The third deals with magic which for some reason western audiences consider low brow. Sadly, like many things foreign, people could careless and would rather not learn what makes a culture different. Case in point this is a movie that is based on series of books written by one if not the most famous author in China. One of her books "Farewell, my concubine, was very famous internationally in the early 90s because of an acclaimed film version. In her decades long career only two of her books are translated. Many don't seem aware of how old and developed Chinese horror is. Finally, there was no nudity and very minimal violence, I look forward to the day more realize that horror is dramatic and not always violent.
