disappointing

I just watched this movie last night, & based on the trailers I was expecting a lot. What I got, however, was probably the most disappointing movie of the year, comprised of an unbelievable story (which by the way didn't really have to do with hacking and/or the hacker scene all that much) and cheesy and ridiculous dialogues.

The acting was good though, and so was the soundtrack. Also, the movie is indeed visually appealing. That, however, doesn't save the weak plot.

While we are good at lighthearted (romantic) comedies, this flick once again shows that the thriller genre is something Germans just can't do.

My recommendation: Watch another movie. If you are curious about this one, wait for it to be shown on TV. That's what it was produced for after all, & you can feel that throughout the entire film.

Totally agree with you!

After watching the movie, i thought, okay this will probably the first american remake that will be better than the original!

The plot is horrible and full of logical mistakes. The characters did not fit with their roles! Everything is to easy and the *beep* at the end was very lame!

Like you said, only thing really was great was the visuals, the soundtrack and the idea to have a cyberworld in a U-Bahn!

Way much better german movies!

Totally disagree with you.

This movie was everything but not disappointing. Haven't seen many better Thrillers in the past.

Had its flaws, like every other movie of this genre with that topic no matter where its from, but I was entertained. 8.5/10

Absolutely agreed. I would like to add that the acting wasn't good either. Tom Schilling did a good job, as, surprisingly, did Tech-Nick. But Elyas M'Barek is painful to watch. Made me cringe in almost every scene.

The only good things about this movie to me were the soundtrack and the visualization of the dark net.

Also, the movie is obviously inspired by Fight Club. It seemed to me as if they tried hard not to make a exact copy of fight club by changing the end

I agree that it was disappointing overall too. But I liked the acting and the way it was shot. It was very slick and creative IMO. The train sequence depicting the hacking/online world was awesome. That definitely added to the movie. However....

SPOILER ALERT

the ending was very disappointing for me. It just felt like they tried too hard to make the ending a "shock", that it ended up falling flat on their face. First of all, the narrative is entirely told from the main guy's perspective, so already from the beginning the audience is made to suspect that all might not be as it seems. Secondly, as others have pointed out, there are references to Fight Club throughout the film, including the glaringly obvious poster that you can't miss, so you're led to think that this film might have a similar ending. But some of us are not that stupid, we know it can't be that similar because that would be too easy and wouldn't be a "mind *beep*" they promised. So again, at this point, we're led to expect something different. So, you keep wondering what the twist might be conjuring up all sorts of ideas and theories, then the end is revealed... It was like, is that it...ah well, it had to be that because otherwise there would be too many plot holes...never mind... End.

It was a big let down for me, but still enjoyable and I didn't think I wasted my time, so that's a good sign.

After one minute into the film, I already started verifying my guesses about the plot. Indeed it turned out to be predictable once you notice the "classics" to which it is drawing references. This film is nowhere near innovative or stimulating for me.

The ending was the worst of all. Many viewers buy into the story that Ben narrates, that his gang is back with him on the ship, they had a perfect plot, they drilled a hole into his hand, and he has no psych illness. No KIDDING!! I am a psychology major and I think the final scene is just Ben trying to reconstruct his memory with his "imaginary friends." If this is what the film wants to say, they did a poor job. If they were really aiming for a real CLAY team consisting of more than Ben alone, they did an even more lousy job!

And to be honest, I don't like that the film incorrectly educates the audience that his symptons is of multiple personality disorder. Real MPD cases are not like this, and there have been many criminal cases of MPD patients because the "imaginary friends" are usually more violant and hostile than psychologically stable people. If you are interested in personality disorders, please take this chance and read about MPD on Wikipedia.

What Ben has in my opinion is "imaginary friends" and that he feels socially isolated to a point that he believes real people in general want to harm him or laugh at him. So that is more like paranoid schizophrenia like John Forbes Nash Jr. had in "The Beautiful Mind."

What I like about the film though are the hacking techniques and the social interactions among hackers. I am no hacker but also happen to have a formal education in engineering and computer science. I watched the film with an IT person and learned a lot about hackers from this film.

It felt a bit rushed, you never got to get a feel for it.
