There was an amateur video of the missile the media aired

I'll start out by saying I haven't seen this particular documentary, although I have watched another one on YouTube that sounds very similar (just search "TWA 800" and it's the hour long documentary). That particular video, and I'm assuming maybe this one too since I didn't see any reference to it in the other comments, leave out the FACT that the media aired amateur footage of the incident. It was taken along the east coast that night showing an object in the sky that was, in my opinion, similar to a firework at first, but with the trail disappearing shortly after being fired.

The video I saw showed a projectile of some sort traveling from the lower right side of the screen, towards the upper left. As I mentioned before, the visible fire trail eventually disappeared, but you could see it long enough to know what direction it was going. I even remember someone in authority claiming that what we saw was shrapnel falling down, and that it just looked like it was going upwards!

That video was supposedly confiscated, never to be aired again. Considering that in this day and age nobody seems to be able to produce that footage, not even to debunk it, leads me to believe that it likely was a missile. I also remember at that time the media mentioning a military veteran (maybe the Vietnam Vet?) coming forward saying that he believed flight 800 was shot down, but you didn't hear much more about that idea. Next thing you heard was their bs explanation that it was probably some bad wiring.

The reason I'm writing this is to inform people that there is additional evidence that was covered up, again, assuming that it might not have been mentioned in this particular video, and also to assure anyone that had seen it that they're not crazy. The media really did air it, and I did see it. I was 17 at the time and plenty old enough to know what I was seeing. My personal opinion is that it was likely just a military accident, and they don't want to take the blame. Hopefully some day, if enough people keep questioning it, we'll get some answers.

If you can watch this documentary, there is a very brief clip that looks like what you describe right around 34:53. It looks like a flare rising above several buildings. The clip is only a second or two long.
