I use to like Saul...

I use to like Saul but he's a real scumbag. What he did to his brother made me ill. I wouldn't have him as a friend if you paid me.

I would love to beat this guy to death with a sledgehammer. Not really. Hah-hah.

You "use" to like him or you "used to like him".

Try the latter. Sorry!

Have a nice day!

reply

It's a typo. Not worth being an asshole about.

reply

Actually, Rolltide, it is.

reply

He wasn’t being an asshole at all.

reply

No, he was being a condescending asshole, or, well trying to anyway, but I agree with just a plain run of the mill asshole.

reply

Sometimes we all can appreciate an English lesson. I learned something today!

reply

The "used to" expression is a weird one. I don't think it really matters, and when people speak you it's hard to tell which they are saying. "Use" means to employ something, so "used to like" would be past tense, but it's hard to figure out the actual meaning or reason for saying "used to". Also, when people see someone that is correct acting like a jerk, they get the impression that if you are correct you have the right, even the responsibility to act like a jerk. No big deal, but that is the point.

reply

It's all in how you look at things I suppose! I can definitely see what you mean, it can come across irritating to be corrected like that rather than answering your question.

I try to not let myself go to the anger response because if I let myself get triggered it really ruins my day, or at least a few hours. I've sort of forced myself to squash that down as I get older and try to change people's negative reactions into something positive.

I come off really naive I guess because people are probably going at their comments with the worst intentions but I'd rather be naive and happy. I've made a conscious choice to do that at one point and now I don't even realize I'm doing it.

Jimmy aka Saul was a horrible person and a crook. Chuck was right about him.

reply

Jimmy was the way he was because of Chuck. Chuck didn’t even give him a chance, he did everything he could to sabotage Jimmy and it was all because he was jealous of him. I’m glad Chuck died, the fat fuck deserved it.

reply

Saul within the context of Breaking bad fit in. He was funny and amusing. Within the context of BCS it is different. He has a girlfriend who is honest and law abiding. He has a brother who despite being an arrogant ass and insufferable prig is also a by the book lawyer and law abiding.

So Jimmy's indiscretions stick out here. There are others like Cliff Main and Schweikart and Howard who are all affected by Jimmy. We do not know much about their personal lives but they are honorable professionals.

Jimmy cons people like most people say hello. Like when he fake falls on the drumstick in the music store.

reply

Ummmm, what Chuck did to Jimmy is far worse than anything that Saul, Walt, Fring, Hank, etc. ever did.

reply

Ultimately though, even though Chuck inadvertently pushed him further to the dark side, he was fundamentally right about Jimmy.

But the beauty of this show is that nothing is really black and white, and the whole situation can be looked at from different angles. And we still have sympathy for Jimmy despite all the shady crap he does.

reply

What he did to his brother? How carefully did you watch the show? Chuck used his petty jealousy and inability to believe that Jimmy was no longer the same person he was in his youth to justify repeatedly sabotaging and mistreating Jimmy, despite Jimmy bending over backwards at every turn to help Chuck.

Chuck had a mental illness, but that doesn't forgive his smug, malicious behavior. It was hugely satisfying to see him finally get his just desserts in the hearing before the state bar.

reply

What in particular are you talking about. What really got me, and I didn't pay a lot of attention to this show while it was on, but the scene when he appeared in front of the legal board to get back his license was particularly repugnant, and he admitted it in front of ?? what was her name Kim? It's been a while. I really wondered what is the deal with this show, did they have to criminalize it so it would appeal to Breaking Bad fans' expectations?

I think the character is not that different from the average American who has to struggle through their life because the system is so stacked against them.

In fact, Jimmy was such a sleaze, that I don't think that had he been a real character/person he really ever would have had grit to get through law school.

reply

I used to like Saul.

I still do, but I used to, too!

reply

OK Mitch Hedberg

reply

I think going from likeable to shithead is exactly what they are going for. We like Saul in BB because we don't actually know that much about him, but a realistically, a lawyer like him would probably be shady as fuck.
