yes, there was definitely self-interest at work. we have no way of knowing what the consequence of mike would be, at the very least he would have lost his position of trust, leadership. i don't think they would have wasted mike, because he has a quite valuable skill-set and having a hired hand go ofg the rails, under the circumstances, does significantly reflect upon his judgement. moreover, he showed a lot skill in organizing the successful effort to collect the fellow. though again him getting as far as he did reflected a managerial failure.
but not being able to clean up the situation ultimately, himself. would have indicated a weakness to gus that would have marginalized him, at best.
it is not unthinkable that they would have taken mike out too, but no necessary reason to see that as inevitable.
the aspect of self-interest or even self-preservation, in this discussion, is worth keeping in mind. mike didnt come into the organization as a soldier, he came in as a capo.
