A few questions (SPOILERS)

First, I did enjoy the film, thought it quite good, so not picking.

1. There was talk about these divers being hung out to dry by the private company they were employed by. Rescue was from a US Naval vessel on the word of a Chinese fishing boat. Did anyone else not think this plot thread was going to be expanded on with the divers threatening to cut oil lines and cause billions of $ of damage unless rescued?

2. I might have this wrong, but why didn't the final 2 divers simply inflate anything (loose clothing etc.) to raise them to the surface MUCH faster? I understand a little of the risk of the bends/nitrogen poisoning from fast decompression, but if anything this would have made them unable to swim and require some buoyancy?

3. Wouldn't the last 2 divers at least have tried buddy breathing and body contact (shared body heat) to the length of the umbilical - then used flotation to assist the final section to the surface?

reply

1. I don't even think that would of crossed their minds. Even if they did that, it would bring much dishonor to not only their place of employment but their families and that's not the kind of men they were. Besides they knew their private company were doing the best they could to rescue them with the little information that they had.

2. Do you realize how far they were still underwater? Even though they lifted the vessel up closer to the surface it wasn't enough.

3. How could both of them even make it to the umbilical cord with only one safety helmet?

1. My question was that this might have crossed their minds to save their lives. "Much dishonour to their place of employment"? Wow. You must have missed the several lines in the film where it was implied that the company they worked for had hung them out to dry.

2. Yes. You haven't understood my point. They were trying to reach the surface as fast as possible (despite risk of Decompression Sickness). Their issue was being able to breath long enough to reach the surface. Inflating anything inside the bell to hold would have greatly speeded up their rise to the surface, required less effort to swim up, continued to raise them in the likely event they lost consciousness, assisted when they reached the surface and likely been unconscious or weak.

3. I don't know what you mean. The umbilical cord was the air to the diver from the bell in this case (there was also the bell umbilical cord anchoring the bell below the surface). They didn't have to 'reach' any umbilical. Buddy breathing is the most basic safety measure of a diver to share an air source when one is lost. Sharing the umbilical air source to it's extent to the surface, plus the buoyancy aids to both seem like simple ideas that might have saved both their lives?

The guy was assuming that their company would leave them out to dry. He was thinking the worst.

reply

I don't think he just assumed that, it was explicitly stated I think that the company had not issued any distress message for the divers and refused to share maps when other attempted a rescue?
I was thinking during the film, these guys could threaten sabotage of billions of dollars of infrastructure down there to get some motivation for a quick rescue :). I thought the film would actually go that way when they were effectively abandoned by their employers.
