A film of small moments

Small acts of courage and kindness. Casual brutality, swastikas and nazi uniforms of all kinds. Party members in every apartment block and place of work plus networks of informers. Being afraid is a way of life - normalised and lived with. Then the small, almost meaningless act of protest triggers a long running investigation and the end result is inevitable. But it remains a film of small acts, the dignity of the old lady, the embarrassment of the thuggish hitler youth. The policeman doing his job professionally and not thinking of the consequences. But most of all the low key emotional build between Gleeson and Thompson as thier relationship is rekindled.
This film could have been made as a high tension game of cat and mouse but I very much like this way of telling the story.

Your review expresses nicely the essence of the film and the book as well.
